Troll faces, popularly known as trolls, are something that you must have come across on the internet. They are generally used in a comical sense to invoke laughter or make fun of something. The Troll faces have spread like wildfire across the internet. Troll faces were originally known as Rage faces. They were used in humourous illustrated panels called Rage comics. The first ever rage comic was posted on the 4chan/b/random board in 2008. It was a simple 4-panel strip showing the author’s anger about getting “splashback” while on the toilet, with the final panel featuring a zoomed-in Face, known as Rage Guy, screaming “FFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUU-“. It was quickly reposted and modified, with other users creating new scenarios and characters.

Over the years, there were many more Troll faces introduced to the internet based on some legendary reactions by well known celebrities all around the world. These popular faces include names such as Neil Patrick Harris, Neil Degrasse Tyson, Tobey Maguire, Nicolas Cage and even Barack Obama. A popular theory suggests that troll faces eventually evolved into memes. Here we have listed the origins of some of the iconic troll faces for you.

True Story:

This face was first featured on reddit. The picture features the image of Neil Patrick Harris in the role of Barney Stinson, in the show ‘How I Met Your Mother’. This is usually used at the bottom/end panel of a rage comic to validate a claim that is generally too far fetched to be true.

When to use: While boasting about how much drink you can put down, even though you passed out after a beer the night before.

Watch Out Guys:

     

This reaction, by the famous astrophysicist Neil Degrasse Tyson, was first made into a troll face in the year 2011. The outline drawing was based on a still image from an interview with Tyson on living and longevity, which was uploaded to YouTube on June 3rd, 2011. The expression was made by Neil while explaining how Newton had invented calculus just before his 26th birthday.The image goes with the text reading, “Watch out guys, we have a badass here.” It is used to mock arrogant and boastful statements made by Internet users.

When to use: To deal with that one friend of yours who adds ten hashtags in a picture and calls himself a photographer because he has an iphone.

You Don’t Say?

You don’t say is a sarcastic response to any remark or observation made that is very obvious. The troll face features the image of Nicolas Cage from the 1988 vampire movie, Vampire’s kiss. Nicolas Cage, although being a critically acclaimed actor, is heavily featured in the memeing community because of the choice of the films he does and his over dramatic acting.

When to use: All the time in general, in response to the lame jokes that your BFF keeps throwing at your way.

Creepy Tobey

Creepy Tobey is a rage comic character and reaction face taken from a still frame of Tobey Maguire in the Spider-Man 3 Bloopers reel. It is often used humorously as simply an odd face, or as a face implying innuendo.

When to use: When sending that risky text to your crush and she asks what do you mean by that.

My brain is full of fuck:

The image of Jackie Chan in the troll comics is generally used to show the expression of disbelief. The image features the face of Jackie looking perplexed with his hands almost touching his head and it goes with the catchphrase, “My brain is full of fuck”,representing the inability to comprehend whatever is shown above the troll face.

When to use: When your friend sends you a chain message which would kill you the if you don’t share it with 15 people./When you’re being sarcastically rhetoric to your friend and he takes it seriously.

Not Bad

The Not Bad troll face came into existence in the year 2011, after the Obamas’ first visited the United Kingdom. The photo of the two time american president was taken by a Reuters photojournalist. It later went viral on reddit, a couple of days later. Even Barack Obama himself was spotted referencing to this particular troll face of his during an AMA, for which he was on Reddit for 30 minutes. This troll face is usually used in response of a context which goes well beyond expectations.

When to use: That moment while entering the class 10 mins late when you were sure that you’d lose the attendance, only to see the teacher isn’t in the class yet.

This popular meme face was drawn by the Carlos Ramirez in the year 2008. It was meant to denote the pointless nature of trolling people on the 4chan’s /v/board. The expression is usually used to associate oneself or another participant, representing a mischievous smile, often implying as trolling.

When to use: Best suited for the time your sibling has to face the wrath of mom for something that you did.

The iconic lead singer of British band Queen, late Freddie Mercury features in the rage comics as an expression of a triumphant accomplishment.The original photo of Freddie Mercury raising his fist was taken during a Queen concert in Newcastle at St. James Park in 1986. It is placed at the end of the rage panel depicting that an extraordinary feat has been accomplished.

When to use: The moment when you’ve finally gathered enough courage to ask bae out only to realize she’s been hoping for the same.

Bitch Please:

The drawing comes from the photograph of Yao Ming captured from a post-game press conference in May 2009. Later in the year 2010, reddit user “downlow” has posted some rage faces that he had drawn but never used, which had the above image as well. Another redditor then replied on the image saying that it looked as Yao Ming was saying “Bitch Please” in the image. Ever since the image has been synonymous with that phrase. It is generally used to disregard or invalidate someone’s opinion in a discussion online..

When to use: That moment when a pop up appears on your screen saying you can win $10,00,000 by just one click.

Oh God Why:

“Oh God Why” is the rage face used to depict embarrassing stories and incidents related to one’s past. The rage face is generally placed at the end of the panel of a rage comic. The credit for creation of this rage expression goes to a redditor by the name “ozzymustaine”. The redditor first posted the rage comic with this face, in the year 2011 and it got viral almost immediately after that.

When to use: When you’ve called friends over and your mom starts telling all your childhood stories to them.
