Noisy Garage Door? Some Tips to Help Quiet Your Garage Door

Noisy Garage Door? Here’s How to Get Rid of It Once and For All!!

Are you at your wit’s end with your noisy Garage door? Is your noisy Garage Door waking your family members up when you come and go? Is it so loud your neighbors have made mention of it?

Luckily, many noisy garage doors can be silenced in just a few easy steps!

Tighten All Nuts and Bolts

Your garage door can consist of over a hundred nuts, bolts and screws, all of which can rattle loose through regular daily operation. A few minutes spent checking over these items with a basic wrench and socket set could eliminate your problem.

Upgrade Your Rollers

If you’ve checked your nuts and bolts and you still have a noisy garage door, try checking your garage door rollers. Your standard garage door will have 5 or 6 rollers on each side of the tracks. Inspect the garage door rollers by moving them back and forth with your fingers. You can also open and close the door while watching the rollers to identify any leaning, broken rollers.

If you have metal garage door rollers, it’s a great idea to upgrade to the nylon rollers, as these are much quieter during operation. If you determine that your garage door rollers are your issues, call a professional garage door technician. Do not try to replace rollers on your own, they are extremely dangerous, especially the ones located in the bottom section, and usually the garage door rollers you can buy at the store are of poor quality and will cause you additional problems.

Inspect Door Hinges

As garage doors age the hinges become worn, many times causing a loud screeching or grinding noise during opening and closing. Inspect the hinges closely for cracks, move them with your hands to check for seized hinges. You can usually quiet a loud hinge with some simple WD-40, however, if this doesn’t work or your garage door hinge is cracked, then they need to be replaced immediately, both for noise and safety.

Garage Door Openers

A lot of the noise during operation can come from your garage door opener. A loud motor may be a sign of an aging, weak garage door opener in need of replacement. Check the rail assembly on your opener. If you have a metal chain, like a bicycle chain, it may need to be tightened to prevent from it rattling against the steel rail.

If you truly want to eliminate your garage door opener noise, consider upgrading to a belt drive operator as these are the quietest on the market today.
