White is a popular colour for Furniture and décor thanks to its versatility, and ability to work in almost any kind of room décor. It can be fresh and contemporary in a bright high-gloss finish, or a charming and rustic wash over textured wood.

But how do you keep white furniture white?

You may think that leaving your white furniture out in direct sunlight is absolutely fine. I mean, usually you’re supposed to avoid direct sunlight on your furniture as it may bleach out and fade the colour. But if it’s white already, there should be no problem, right? Well, exposure to direct sunlight will yellow and dull the white over time.

How to keep white wooden furniture clean

Use a soft microfibre cloth to regularly clean your white wooden furniture, and clean immediately if there are any spills. You can prevent the buildup of dust (which is especially visible on white wood) by wiping it down with the lightly dampened cloth, applying a little extra pressure as necessary on smudges and anything else caked on.

A quality wood furniture polish can reduce the visibility of scratched surfaces, but application should be limited to a few times a year to prevent further damage from over-polishing.

How to keep white upholstery clean

Prep your white upholstery before Cleaning. This includes vacuuming and ensuring that you have all the recommended cleaning supplies at hand as per the cleaning codes on the tags. Read the tags!

You want to make sure that the upholstery is clean of any dust and debris that might be hiding in any creases. Not only does this make the white upholstered furniture easier to clean, but you won’t just be rubbing in or rubbing around the dirt. Even a thin layer of dust could be obscuring a stain…

Regularly wipe down the upholstery with a clean microfibre cloth that’s been dampened with mild, soapy, cool water. Follow the natural grain of the fabric for the best results. For a deep clean, if the cleaning codes on the furniture allow, then you can wash any removable covers in the washing machine. Save this for when you really need it, as too frequently and it can damage the fabric over time. You could even take it to a dry cleaner for a more professional deep clean. Alternatively, you can achieve professional results yourself if you have access to a steam cleaner.

Try not to soak all the way through the fabric. If it really does require a deep clean by hand then do it in steps, allowing the furniture to dry completely before going back in with the damp cloth. However, don’t try to clean white leather with water! In fact, leather should be kept as dry as possible during the cleaning process.

Spot clean as you need to. Baby wipes are something you may already have on hand, and are fantastic for quickly cleaning upholstery in emergencies, due to how gentle they are.
