Invest in a high-quality fan.

A bathroom fan prevents mold by working with your ventilation system to prevent moisture accumulation. The fan sucks moisture out of the air, through your vent system, and out of your home. Making sure your bathroom fan works effectively is one of the most important things you can do to prevent mold.

Calculate the proper fan strength by taking the square footage of your room. Multiply that measurement by 1.1 if your ceiling is eight feet or 1.5 if it’s nine. Any fan you buy will have its CFM (cubic feet per minute) count printed on it. Make sure that it fits with the strength you calculated.

Use that fan!

Having a fan installed to transfer moisture out of your bathroom is great… but only if you use it. A few tips: don’t wait until after you’re done showering to turn your fan on. Turn it on before and keep it running afterwards until all the mirrors are defogged.

If you don’t trust yourself to stay on top of turning your fan off when it’s not needed, you could install one with a build-in timer.

Stay on top of leaks.

The biggest perpetrator of bathroom mold, especially in small bathrooms, is moisture leftover after showering. It’s not the only perpetrator, however. Leaks, especially ones hidden beneath sinks or out of the-way in your toilets p-trap, can also cause moisture accumulation.

If you suspect you have a leak in your bathroom, take care of it or bring in a pro asap.

Wash your bathroom linens.

Your bathroom linens are a place where mold absolutely loves to proliferate. They spend a lot of time in your small bathroom, hanging damp; a perfect breeding ground for bacteria. Wash your towels, bath mat, and bathroom rug at least once per week. That will cut off any mold growth before it can get to your walls, tub, or beyond.

Get a small squeegee for your shower or bath.

Repeat after us: don’t deny the power of the squeegee. You can pick one up at your local IKEA for less than two dollars. Having one hanging in your shower or bath can make all the difference between mold growth and no mold growth.

Squeegee the walls inside after every bath or shower to prevent moisture from having the time to sit and fester and turn into mold. Shake your squeegee off inside the bath to dry it, then hang it up for the next time.
