How to Hold Yourself Accountable

The middle of the year is an ideal time to revisit your goals and resolutions. For those of us who prefer a daily planner that follows the academic year, this is a time to start fresh and set out to Achieve what’s most important. Regardless of what’s on your list, there’s one question that inevitably comes to mind when we think about a particular goal or new plan: “Will I be able to stick with it?”

Holding yourself Accountable is an important part of ensuring that you’ll be able to stick with your goals. Without accountability, it can be difficult to achieve anything—especially when it comes to our more challenging or time-consuming goals.

Accountability can come in many forms: a journal or some other way of tracking your progress; or a close friend who you can confide in. Some find that going public with their plans can help keep them on track.

When it comes to accountability, it’s important to find a system that will work for you. Let’s take a look at a few different ways that you can hold yourself accountable.

Be Specific

One of the most important steps when goal-setting is to be super specific. While there is nothing wrong with setting broad, big-picture goals, it’s important not to be vague. Failing to pinpoint what, exactly, you want to achieve will make it harder for you to end up where you want to be. Being specific allows you to create clear plans and set parameters. It’ll also allow you to track your progress, and make sure you’re on track.

Find a Mentor

Finding a mentor who can provide helpful and insightful support can be a great way to keep on track. While those who are closest to us tend to give an emotional response to our questions or problems, seeking an outside perspective can help you to gain fresh advice and a completely unbiased opinion—which can prove to be invaluable when you’re navigating uncharted waters.

Keep a Journal

Keeping a journal can help you to track your progress, and is especially valuable when it comes to holding yourself accountable. Journaling allows you to let down your walls, be honest with yourself, and eventually will let you reflect and see just how far you’ve come.

Go Public

Some people find that going public with their objectives can give them the dose of accountability that they need to keep on track. Social media can be one way to announce your goals, or consider alerting certain friends and family members about your resolutions and intentions. Being open with your plans allows others to check in with you to see how you’re going—putting helpful pressure on you to achieve them!

Team Up

Regardless of what you are hoping to stick with—whether it’s a new healthy routine, eating plan, or important project—things are always more enjoyable when you’re doing it with someone else. Teaming up with a friend or a teammate will also give you someone that you can hold yourself accountable to—helping to keep you on-track with no excuses!

Accept Responsibility

Finally, while having someone to hold yourself accountable to can give you an excellent advantage, it’s important to remember that at the end of the day, you are responsible for your choices—both good and bad. Sticking with your resolutions or charting a new way of life takes time and effort. It doesn’t happen overnight. You are taking a bold risk where difficulties will arise. Powering through will leave you stronger and happier, but first, you must accept that you are responsible for yourself. Only once you’ve accepted complete responsibility will you be able to muster up the courage and motivation to see your goals through to the end.
