USED CARPET: 7 Reasons Why You Would Only Buy Used Carpet For Your Home or Investment Property

Buying Carpet can be a real nightmare. It can be difficult to figure out how to get the best material or quality at the right price when there are so many otpions to choose from.
If you are on the hunt for your next floor covering, then you should seriously consider buying used carpet. Below I have listed 7 reasons why you would only buy used carpet for your home or investment property, which I hope will help you in your decision making.
  1. Floor Coverings take the brunt of everything. It is the same as buying a new car, once you drive it out it is a used car. It has been said by elderly carpet layers (rare) that used second hand commercial carpet gets better as it gets older. The carpet actually adjusts to your lifestyle and what is noticeable when the carpet is first laid becomes a distant blur in a very short time.
  2. Used commercial carpets are a superior cloth in contrast to domestic carpets on the market. These carpets are predominantly heavy-duty wool because wool wears very well. They also contains less toxicity on flame than synthetic carpets. Commercial wool carpet comes from high-rise office blocks and is designed for hundreds of people daily to walk on. When it is relayed into a domestic environment normally two adults, maybe four kids and a couple of dogs walk on it. This is still nothing in comparison to what it is designed to take. The architectural specifications on carpet for these buildings are second to none.
  3. When buying carpet, don’t use feel as a guide. Feet should be used to judge, not fingertips. In order to tell how much weave there is dig your finger nails in to try and feel the backing which gives you a good indication of how much carpet there is per square inch. You can work out the quality of the pile this way. Not all used carpet is wool, however because it is industrial quality, even the polyprop or synthetic carpet is incredibly durable and long lasting.
  4. Remember that only 33.3 per cent of your floor is seen after furniture goes in. This means you can get away with colour variations a lot more, so buying used carpet makes total sense.
  5. Speak to your carpet company about where your furniture is going. Your entry hall, lounge room and dining room are the most noticeable areas for your floor coverings because there will be less furniture on these areas. Bedrooms are generally hidden with beds and wardrobes etc. The carpet company can cut your used second hand commercial carpet around your specifications so the carpet has a consistent look to it.
  6.  You can save up to 60% off new prices by buying used carpet. I bought used carpet for an investment property 12 months ago (three bedrooms plus lounge). I had been quoted over $3,000 for new carpet (carpet, underlay and laying), that you could literally see through when you held it up against sunlight. New carpet was polyprolene (plastic) and I was looking at the cheapest in stock. I ended up buying used commercial carpet, heavy duty wool, beige colour, thick and soft for $1650 (with underlay and laying).
  7. It takes up to 19kgs of C02 gas to manufacture new carpet. Buying used carpet has massive savings not only on your hip pocket, but on your environmental footprint. Every year, landfill is piled up more and more with commercial floor coverings - from carpet to carpet tiles. Often this product is being thrown out because of new tenancies, refurbishments or because the boss didn't like the colour! Over 50% of the time, there is NOTHING wrong with this product. We can all do our bit to look after the environment and buying a reusable floor covering is one way to do this.
