Mohawk has in recent times taken to market the worlds softest carpet. It seriously has to be felt to be believed. What makes the carpet fibre so soft ? And whats it actually made from ? If you have read my previous posts on Smartstrand, then the name Smartstrand Silk may give it away. Yes, its a new development in Smartstrand, the brand name for Mohawk's Triexta fibre. Think iPad 2 and then think the new iPad 3. Actually, that may not be fair to Smartstrand Silk, as it is a BIG step up from regular Smartstrand, maybe more than the iPad 3 was from the iPad 2. Nonetheless, you get the picture. It's the latest development in carpet technology from the worlds biggest flooring manufacturer. And it's fantastic. I have been in the industry for over 20 years and not seen a carpet that is so soft, yet so durable and stain resistant.

What makes it so soft. Well the industry world wide is for ever chasing the most hard wearing and softest carpet fibre they can develop to keep pace with consumer expectations and stay ahead of competition. Mohawk has the benefit over other manufacturers, in that it had Smartstrand to begin with, so all it had to do was come up with a way of making what was already a magnificent carpet fibre even softer. And it has.

By making each filament smaller they have made the product even softer. Because the strength of the carpet fibre is at its molecular level in terms of it's structure and terms of its stain resistance, the softness of the carpet does not come at the cost of durability. It's all engineered right inside each fibre.

All of the larger manufacturers are chasing the development of low denier fibres in a quest to deliver softer and softer carpet, and Mohawk's Smartstrand Silk would have to be the clear winner, head and shoulders above its competition. Other manufacturers don't have the Smartstrand. They have nylon and polyesters. They can make them softer, but they can't change the properties of the actual fibres they have to work with.

Smartstrand Silk is therefore in a league of its own.

Anyone who is buying carpet MUST at least go into a dealer and FEEL this carpet before buying anything else. You would be kicking yourself if you purchased something else and then noticed this product in a friends house and realised you could have had the same. When you go in and look at it, make sure you have a look at the test board that shows the change in appearance after a simulated 12 months use....guess what ? It's totally unchanged. That's right. After 12 months of simulated wear by Mum. Dad & 2 kids in a passage way, the carpet is unchanged. That's how good it is.


Mohawk has really proven that you can have your cake & eat it too !
