A Few Favorite Home Warming Layers

Tags: layer shades warm

If you’ve been thinking about how to keep Warm this winter without cranking up the thermostat, you’ve come to the right place. Especially this year, as the harsh early winter weather has been pummeling down in some parts of the country, it is ideal to have what you need at home to stay warm and cozy as these bitter months knock on our door. It’s not all about sealing windows, inspecting heating vents, and shoving fireplace stoppers up your chimney, there are simple items to have in your home that will be sure to keep you comfortably toasty for years to come. If you are late in shielding the cold with warm window treatments, here are a few of my favorite ways to keep your house protected from winter’s chill.

Warm Cellular Shades

Any window treatment will help reduce cold air seeping in through frosty windows as 22% heat dissipation is lost through our windows, but for the most energy efficient window treatment, cell Shades are the number one choice for maximizing heat loss and reducing your heating bill. Cell shades are designed for simplicity in their superior insulating abilities by trapping air in the magic little honeycombed shaped packets to shield your rooms to keep cold air at bay. Choose from either a single cell or my go-to is the double cell for an additional Layer of insulating fabric. Cordless cells are a must for safety, ease, decorative appeal and our color selection, patterns and fabric materials are truly limitless and pass the Blindsgalore’s quality control of superior custom craftsmanship and durable, but modern styles – no paper thin or flimsy blinds!

Roman Shades

If you are looking for a more decorative look to your windows, a roman shade paired with a thermal liner is another effective way to prevent heat loss through your windows. A liner also provides the added benefit of blocking UV rays from damaging your custom drapery or shades. Not only do the liners add performance value to the treatments, their weight added to the face of the fabric creates a luxuriously full look.

For even more insulation, layer up your roman shades. Just like layering your winter accessories, gloves will keep your hands warm, but when you add a scarf and a toasty hat, your whole body will remain temperate. Consider adding thermal lined drapery panels over a cellular shade for a crisp and tailored look.

If you prefer this soft designer look, pairing lined drapery with lined Roman shades will give you two strong layers of insulation and look fabulous doing so. These efforts will weaken the heat loss through your windows and help to lower those costly winter heating bills.

Cozy Home Accents

If you need a few more warming home acents, consider area rugs, an electric blanket, a plush robe and thick socks.

Forget about the wiry electric blanket your grandma used to have that you were sure was going to combust at any moment, as there are some stunningly luxurious heated blankets available these days. With the added bonus of being able to climb into a preheated bed, electric blankets are much more efficient than heating up your whole house so you can have a comfortable night’s rest. There’s nothing better than slipping into a lovely warm bed after a miserably freezing day.

Area rugs are a must have design element as far as I’m concerned. They tie different elements of a room together by bringing in color, texture, and softness. Not only decorative, rugs are also functional as they provide an extra layer of insulation on wood or tile floors. By keeping the cool air from seeping up into the room, it’s just another layer between you and the frigid outdoors.  Don’t forget to add them to commonly overlooked areas of the home like halls and entryways.

Get your hands on the thickest bathrobe you can find! Let’s be honest, robes are really just blankets with sleeves that you can move around in. They are perfect to grab in the morning for the first moments after you’re forced to escape your heated, comfortable, and oh-so wonderful bed.

Whenever it’s a chilly night, I’m always sure to put on my thickest wool socks. They will guarantee that I won’t wake up feeling the bite of winter’s cold. There’s truth to the constant advice of keeping your head, hands, and feet covered. Grab one pair for every day of the week and you’ll be all set to ride this winter out.

Brave this year’s winter with these simple warming layers to keep you warm, comfortable and in good spirits through all the winter months ahead.
