Design Junction: my picks

Last night Design Junction was my London Design Festival destination of choice – along with half of the design world I think! Personally I am very happy that the show has moved to Kings Cross, just a short hop from my home. The transformation of Kings Cross has been amazing over the last few years and with so many design businesses locally it is a great place to hold a design show.

First on my list of picks from the exhibitors is Korridor showcased on the Moxon stand and available through their website. Shelving might seem like an easy thing to buy but often it isn’t quite right – or just plain ugly. The Anywhere Shelving system has a number of modules that can be combined to fit your space and create the perfect storage solution. Designed by Danish duo Oooja it is available in black or white steel poles with either lovely oak veneer or white laminate shelves.

Over the past few years Deadgood has consistently designed and manufactured some beautiful furniture and accessories. Their latest sofa, the Scarfell, can be found on their stand in Cubbit House at Design Junction. Elliot Brook, one of the co-founders, explained it was inspired following an eventful team trip up Scafell Pike, England’s highest peak – a pretty tough climb but the result was worth it. The shape of the back of the sofa resembles the boulders on the approach to the summit. Also check out the cheeky smile incorporated into the front seam on the seat cushions.

My final mention today goes to Floor Story, to be found in the West Canopy section of Design Junction. The stand is one of the most colourful displays at the show and includes some great bold designs by many designers including Camille Walala. My favourite on the stand is definitely the beautiful Birds rugs. Manufactured in Pakistan these rugs are a hand-woven flat weave, with the birds embroidered in a natural silk. With hundreds of colour options I’m hoping to use this on a project soon – the effect is even more spectacular if one of the birds is embroidered in a contrasting colour.

Today I visited 100% Design and Luxury Made, and tomorrow it’s the final shows in East London at the London Design Festival. Look out for an update on my picks from the final two shows soon.
