Safety is an issue you will always want to consider when you’re looking at possible living quarters. Find out what kind of security it takes to get into the apartment when you go on a tour. Does it take two keys to get into the room? Or is your door the door to the outside? Is it in a good side of town? All of these things are going to matter, so make sure you’re paying attention and taking notes!

Honesty

Something that you’re going to need to keep in mind when it comes to living off-campus is that you’re going to have to stay honest with yourself and whoever might be living with you. If you aren’t in the mood to get up earlier for classes and walk or even drive thirty minutes, don’t sign a lease for an apartment building that’s more than five or ten minutes walking distance from campus. If you’re honest with yourself about what you really want or need, you’re more likely to enjoy living there for the remainder of the semester. Or even until graduation.

Furniture

When it comes to furniture, some students would prefer renting over buying it because they can avoid storage fees over the summer and don’t have to worry about shipping it, either. If you have relatives that have offered to purchase furniture, don’t feel bad about taking them up on the offer. Every little bit helps and when expenses are already tight and someone wants to help, don’t hesitate to let them. It’ll make them feel good and you can enjoy something that someone you loved sent you when you’re struggling with being a little homesick.

Choosing to live off-campus can be a tough decision and comes with plenty of difficulties that you might not have seen coming. It’s okay to relax and not stress about it! It’s a new experience and adventure and you can throw your shoulders back and enjoy it.
