Floor Sanding Made Easy

Floor Sanding seems to be a lot of work. It doesn’t have to be. Here are the easy steps you can follow in order to sand your floors.

Have your tools ready. You can rent floor sanders from your local hardware store. Ask them what you need for personal protection and make sure you get those. Get the right sanding paper as well.

If you have carpet and other material covering the original hardwood, remove those. Just pull them up with a pry bar. Make sure you have a hammer and screwdriver. Use the flat end of the pry bar and pull up all the tacks and staples. Use the hammer to pull up nails. Use the screwdriver to pull up screws. Carefully look at the floor and make sure all the nails, staples, and tacks are removed. You don’t want those damaging your floor sanders. Sweep and clean the floor area to make sure there is no clutter or dust left.

First of all, you put on a mask that helps you breathe but filters all the fine wood dust that comes from sanding. It’s good to do so even though you use a sander that has a vacuum that sucks up most of the dust.

Attach the coarse grit sandpaper to the sanding machine. Next, you mentally decide to divide the floor into different sections and and in a backward and forward motion start sanding each section. Sand until all the old finish is not seen anymore. When all the floor boards have been sanded, sweep up the leftover dust. If you use a vaccuum, make sure it’s got the attachment that will not scratch the already sanded floor.

Replace the sandpaper on the machine with sandpaper that will even up the texture of the wood. Go back and forth again with that sandpaper over the entire floor. The floor should feel softer and smoother. Usually there are spots that are hard to reach with the regular floor sander, so it’s best to use a smaller sander for those areas.

Sweep or carefully vacuum the floor again. If you really want the floor to be free of dust, use a slightly damp (not too wet) washcloth or mop and go over the sanded areas. Make sure you change the water every so often so that the washcloth is clean every time you go over the sanded floors. Let the floors dry for a couple of hours or more. It is best to wait 24 hours after going over the floors with the mop or damp cloth before putting on the finish.

After 24 hours, your floor is ready for protective coating.
