We spend one third of our lives sleeping, so our Bedroom should be one of the most important rooms in our houses. However, it frequently is a vastly overlooked room with nothing more than just a bed and a couple of wardrobes. Do not underestimate the importance of sleeping in a nice and cozy bedroom, though. A disorganized or uninspired one can make it hard to relax, and may have a negative influence on the quality of your sleep.

Bedroom remodeling is a very affordable project for a makeover, and all you need is often just a little surface work. Still, before you start browsing the web in search for the perfect Furniture, you should have a clear idea of what style of design that you prefer. By all means, your final goal should always be to find the options that allow you to sleep most comfortably. Yet, appeasing your need for style is just as important since the more you like your room, the more relaxed you’re going to be.

How much is a “contemporary” design different from a “modern” one? And what objects define a “traditional” bedroom design? Actually,  what’s truly “modern” vs “contemporary” is still a bit controversial, but we can give you a useful tips on how to choose the right design for your own bedroom, regardless of its name.

Modern design

Modern design usually refers to a specific era of the mid-twentieth century, although it also includes the first age of full mass-production of  furniture pieces and machination (generally 1920s to 1950s). Modern design is quite different from contemporary one especially when it comes to selection of materials. Plastic and metal usually compose the main body of furniture, which is strangely mixed up and decorated by natural materials.

Straight, clean shapes with sharp or seriously twisted edges generate strange items that will often provide unsuspecting comfort when you try them, as this is an era of great experimentation. Great white spaces, lots of stucco and whitewash are often employed with strange and unexpected asymmetries. Colors tend to be quite bright, and the preferred lights are natural and standing ones. A wide window or a very tall lamplight is preferred to the complexity of light spots typical of contemporary design.

Traditional Design

Traditional design employs strong, massive furniture, with bold furnishing and rich decorations. Color tones are usually neutral but intense, like gold, brown, black, beige or dark green. It is also common to see a lot of  embellishments like sculpted posts, claw foot chairs, or baroque armoires.

Most traditional decor is inspired by older European designs from 18^th and 19^th century. And the spaces are usually filled with several pieces of furniture and accessories, like roll-top desks, and hardwood furniture tapestries, and paintings on the walls. Walls are often covered with wallpapers and the preferred trim material is wood. The lighting tends to be soft and subdued, with yellow lamps, hanging chandeliers and heavy curtains stopping natural light in order to create a cozy and secluded environment. Windows are large and sturdy, and sash or bay windows are also appreciated as they embellish the house exterior as well.

Contemporary design

Contemporary architecture is an umbrella term that includes every form of art that’s being produced right now. Although many other modern designs originally invented in the ‘70s may look like futuristic enough to appear very similar to contemporary ones, they’re still too vintage to pertain to this category. Today, our actual “contemporary” design is a mix of both traditional and modern, and it’s mostly focused on practicality and edginess.

Shiny and smooth surfaces like steel and glass are juxtaposed together, and most shapes tend to be rounded and somewhat bulbous. Subtly camouflaged lightning effects are used frequently, like lights coming from the ground under the bed or just above it instead of modern and traditional lamplights. Contemporary bedrooms tend to be more solid, with very little whitewash that is instead substituted with vast empty spaces like large wide windows or glass panels. Many natural materials like wood or ceramics are embellished with more “industrial” ones like metal or plastic, but what really makes contemporary design stand out is its practicality and function.

Conclusion

If you plan to redo your bedroom, you should try to avoid changing its style too drastically. Don’t mix modern-style drawers with a beautiful traditional wardrobe – it will just look terrible.

Also, buying new furniture is not necessarily a good idea. Often, just a new coat of paint or varnish is more than enough to regenerate your furniture. Some scratch repair or a good polish is sometimes all you need to bring your room back to life. A few lights here and there can help you make it more pleasant and comfortable without changing the character of the room completely. You will be surprised by how much a really cheap accessory such as a lamp can increase visibility and provide your bedroom with an unexpected facelift, without overloading the senses.

However, if you want to totally overhaul your furniture, go for it. Once again, this is the place where you’re going to spend most (if not all) of your nights, and you want it to be as pleasant and attractive as it could be.
