When to Replace Your Kitchen Cabinets

Kitchen cabinets play a huge part in the look of a Kitchen but what happens when the cabinets have been up for a few years. Do you replace them or just get them refaced? Here are the key signs which tell you that your Cabinet needs to be replaced.

Water Damage

The first sign to look out for is water damage. When cabinets suffer from water damage they tend to look swollen and they don’t close properly. Don’t worry if there is minor water damage then the cabinets can be fixed but if you are noticing these signs on your kitchen cabinet then the water damage is more serious than you think. The first sign to look out for is bubbling. If your kitchen cabinets are bubbling, then that means water has gotten into the cabinets causing the finish to rise off the surface causing the bubbling. Another sign to look out for is the colour of the wood. If the wood has started to darken and look black that means that the cabinets are starting to rot in which case the cabinets need to be replaced immediately.

Feeling Soft

This is a sign that you need to replace your kitchen cabinets as soon as possible. Push on the side of your cabinets a little. If they feel soft to the touch, then this means that your cabinets are seriously damaged and will start to fall apart. Other than the doors the sides of your cabinets are the most important because if they are damaged then there is no way you can make any ‘aesthetic’ changes to your kitchen. That will just waste money.

New Layout

Creating a new kitchen layout can be a stressful thing. When creating a new layout, it’s better to replace your cabinets instead of refacing them. This won’t only make the cabinets fit in with the new kitchen, but you have prevented a problem that would more likely appear later.

The Smell

When the cabinets start to smell – REPLACE THEM. Even though the cabinet frames can be reinforced the smell won’t budge. This is when replacing your cabinets is a must. No-one wants to walk into a kitchen that smells musty and old, it’s not appealing. Next time you are in your kitchen and you smell something strange give your kitchen cabinets a sniff (despite how strange that will look).

These are some things to take note of when deciding to replace your kitchen cabinets. When replacing them don’t just jump at the first offer, research different companies to get the best price for you.
