I made the vintage Style Pleated Skirt from Peppermint Magazine using a free pattern. I wanted a basic, solid-coloured skirt that would go with my many patterned tops, and this fit the bill!
The free pattern is designed by In the Folds for Peppermint Magazine. The skirt has pockets, front and back pleats, and uses an invisible back zipper closure.
Peppermint Magazine rates this pattern as Advanced Beginner, and it includes detailed instructions. The pattern pdf has layered sizes, so you choose your size to print; this makes it really easy to cut out! The skirt pattern includes seamlines in the pdf, as well as a test square to ensure size is accurate. The directions also specify different seam allowances, which range from 3/8″ to 3/4″.
The
Vintage Style Pleated skirt pattern offers 10 available sizes, from waist measurements 24-45.5″ / 61-116 cm. The instructions even specify what height the skirt is drafted for and where the hem should hit! In the Folds drafted this skirt for a height of 170 cm and states that the hem should hit just below the knee. I am 170 cm tall, but I like my skirts to hit just above my knee, so I shortened the skirt by 5 cm. To do so, I eliminated the hem facing and folded the hem up before stitching in place.
I used a red cotton chambray from my stash that I got from Fabricland. To prevent the waistband from stretching out, I added some fusible interfacing. I also add some interfacing to where the zipper attaches to help reinforce the fabric. The skirt is unlined, but I’d like to make another and add a lining. The chambray is a casual fabric that is perfect for summer! I can imagine wearing this dress around Toronto on my bike. I think this would look really cute in linen as well.
To make my vintage style pleated skirt, I chose size F based on my measurements. There are five pleats on each side of the front, but only four in the back. After sewing the pleats, I felt that the skirt was a bit big. To improve the fit, I added a fifth pleat to each side of the back skirt because. I finished the inside seams with old seam tape from my stash so the insides look just as good as the outside!
