Children Die In Preventible Power Mower Accidents

Power Mower Accidents Preventible

Power Mower Accidents Are PreventibleDeath and injuries that do not have to happen.

As a Nashville personal injury lawyer for three decades I have seen thousands of photos and reports of deaths, horrible gut wrenching brutality, but never have I been so absolutely disgusted as I am when I have seen the results of a power mower accidents on the body of a small child.

For the last ten days or so I have carried around a small, now rumpled, news piece about the death of a three-year-old, who died in one of many Nashville power mower accidents. The article tells me that the police developed two diametrically opposed stories. Family, say the child ran out and was hit by the mower. The witness said that the child had been riding with the adult when she slipped and fell into the blades. No charges were filed and the death was listed as accidental according to the Sheriff ‘s Department.

Stupid Is As Stupid Does – Mrs. Gump Was Right

I certainly don’t think people should be prosecuted absent intent, because they were careless and stupid. It makes me mad as hell when children are killed in power mower accidents that does not have to happen. With a small modicum of thought for the potentially dangerous task they are about to undertake (mowing the lawn with a powerful internal combustion engine driven object with large and vicious steel blades) you would think that they might take a moment to ask ourselves things like, are there any hard dangerous objects hidden in the grass on the plot we are about to cut? Is it a good idea to mow with a child on your lap? How about asking yourself, “Where are the children, is there an adult that will see that they don’t wander into the glide path? Little things like that just to be sure.

I was discussing all things personal injury with a lawyer friend who is now living in Washington State on the Olympic Peninsula. He told me that he just read on a local news site that a local child was killed from a power mower accident up there just yesterday. This incident happened the same way. Child riding on her fathers knee slips and falls into the blades and dies. I have to just shake my head.

Please share the news. It’s grass season, it’s the stuff that has your sinus’ going wild. Remember, if you are going to mow that grass make sure that none of your children or neighbor children or the elderly, or anyone for that matter is out of range. Walk the area to be cut and look for possible projectiles before you start. Please, these power mower accidents don’t have to happen.
