When Do Squirrels Have Babies?

Squirrel birthing and mating season occur twice a year. Squirrel mating season happens once between December and February, then again in late June through August.

With the gestation period lasting 38 to 46 days, female Squirrels will give birth in early spring (February through April) or late summer (August/September).

Where do squirrels build their nests?

Squirrels construct two types of nests, Tree Cavity Dens and leaf nests.

Tree cavity dens are either holes left over by woodpeckers or natural holes in older decaying trees. This type of nest is great for squirrels because it provides them with shelter from winter, rain, and snow. Tree cavities are most sought out during the nearing winter months, but are used at other times of the year as well.

Leaf nests are built at high altitudes to remain hidden and constructed in the branches of trees for added stability. These nets consist of small broken twigs, leaves, and dried tufts of grass that the squirrels collect. Like the dens, leaf nests are built to have one entrance/exit point. They hold a similar resemblance to bird nests, but are much larger.

It is not uncommon for squirrels to have more than one “extra” nest short distances from their main nest. These are helpful to squirrels for storing food or as a quick hide-out from an approaching predator.

How many babies do squirrels have?

Female squirrels usually give birth to two to four babies, but may have more. The babies are kept safe by their mother until they are weaned at around 10 weeks. They will stay with their mother for a few more following in order to learn from her and gain their bearings in the unfamiliar territory.

During the time that the babies are still too small to tend for themselves and if one is found outside of its nest, it’s important to know how to help it. Typically if it is juvenile and not injured, the mother will come back to find it, but may not be able to carry it back to the nest. According to the Wildlife Center of Virginia, the best thing to do is to help guide it back to its nest.

Squirrels in the home and attic

Often during birthing season when looking for a place to nest, a female squirrel may enter and begin to build her nest in a homeowners attic, shed, or chimney. If the female gives birth, you may find a litter of baby squirrels in your home. While babies may be cute, squirrels are nosy and can cause damage to your insulation and electrical wires.

If you hear or find squirrels in your home, it is best to call your local pest professional before removal.
