11 Ingenious DIY Storage Ideas That Look Amazing & Are Budget Friendly!

Are you feeling slightly panicy at the lack of storage in your place? Perhaps you just want to add some functional, unique and magnificent storage to the kids room, the Bathroom or even the kitchen?

Check out these ingenious DIY storage ideas that you can try your hand at. The best part is you can put your own twist on the designs, giving your home a distinctive look and feel.

1. Turn a bookshelf like this one into a hallway storage bench like the one below, or better still, into a window seat!

With a few cushions and a padded seat you could transform a cubed storage shelf into DIY storage as well as a sturdy. The options are endless the more I think about it! What about a shoe storage shelf? or perhaps you can place it at the end or sides of your bed? I’m sure a child would love it as a bench and you could use the slots underneath to add wicker baskets and throw all those pesky toys in.

2. Towel Rack + Hanging Black Wicker Baskets = Contemporary Bathroom Storage. Love!

Most of the time, bathrooms are limited in space. This idea is modern, off the floor & looks fantastic. You could store face towels, toiletries, tissue rolls, candles or whatever else you need in the bathroom. Imagine your guests asking to use your bathroom and seeing that on the wall… Impressive!

3. Drawers Under Steps + Floor to Ceiling Bookshelf PLUS Pull Out Bed = What’s Not To Love?

The pull out drawers built into the steps is a smart and space efficient idea. I love the big book shelf but the only thing I would change is the placement of the bed. Putting a mattress on top of the platform would still allow a seating area, but most importantly it would free up the pull out bed area to convert it into clothes storage. Functional & looking great, huh???!

4. Under Stairs Bookshelf Is Always a Win!

I think you will agree that the space under the stairs is quite often overlooked, but it can be used as a bookshelf, or just generally as a shelving unit for various items. I’ve seen understairs cubby holes for kids, laundry areas and even a home office area. Point is, don’t let this precious space go to waste, and actually, once designed right, it added character to your property.

5. The Return of the Mason Jars… So Many Possibilities!

What do pasta, salad, cotton buds, Q-Tips, buttons, glasses, make up, mini toys and candles all have in common? Give up? You can store ’em all in Mason Jars. Seriously these are one of the best ideas… ever. I recently bought a set of these 12 mason jars in order to meal prep and take salads into work with me. The health kick died out, the use for the mason jars did not. Go. Buy. Some.

6. Sliding Farmyard Doors Over Hidden Laundry Area… No Clutter & Practical!

Farmyard doors always work in my opinion. Whether they lead to a bathroom, a concealed storage area or a bedroom… unless the house is futuristic in design, usually it will work. The laundry area is concealed well and makes the space look decluttered. The colours harmonize well together to make the whole area look well designed.

7. Loft Bed Above Office Area & Walk In Wardrobe Gives A This Room An Airy, Spacious Look

Placing a bed on a platform over the office & walk in storage area is a smart way to increase floor space in the room, giving it a generous size. This would be an great idea for a teenager’s bedroom, or you could switch it up and convert the bed area in to a reading nook, with a playroom beneath.

8. Box Storage Framing a Bed is Practical & Looks Amazing.

If you need more storage in your bedroom but don’t want bulky cupboards taking up space, then this is the perfect contemporary solution. The cube storage units on either side and on the end frame the bed perfectly and the lights are a nice touch.

9. Pull Out Drawers Under Stairs Provide An Awesome Shoe Storage With No Mess

Imagine walking into your house without the sight of dozens of shoes greeting you. Make the most of the space under the stairs and install pull out drawers. Store umbrella’s. shoes or even winter essentials like scarfs and hats… without cluttering up the hallway. If you are slightly OCD like me, this will definitely appeal to you!

10. No More Tripping Over Toys? I. Am. In!

Why do I love this idea so much? Maybe its because I have spent many a night tripping over building blocks and stuffed giraffes (amongst many other toys of all shapes and sizes)! I loved this idea so much that I bought these baskets (couldn’t find the circular design, so I settled for a different shape & we spray painted them rose goldLOVEEEE!!!) for my kid’s play room, now they clean up after themselves before the end of the day. It would be nice to put a few in the bathroom too, to hold fresh towels and bulkier toiletries.

11. A Wooden Ladder Used As A Hanging Rack? Unusual But Soooo Practical!

OK, peeps. There are so many applications for this idea. Lined wicker baskets for storage on top, and an open wardrobe area for your clothes underneath. Drying rack in your laundry room. Indoor hanging garden (wow, I might try this for this exact purpose!). It is unusual, definitely a talking point & insanely functional. Time to up cycle that old wooden ladder!

To wrap it up…

There are so many DIY storage ideas that you can take inspiration from & make into your next project. Adding unusual touches to the design helps define your home’s character, contributes to the ambience, and establishes the ‘homeliness’ of your sanctuary.
