What to do on Valentine’s Day if you’re single

To many singles out there, 14 February may seem fearful.

It may be intimidating to see couples dressed to the nines and holding hands everywhere in public. It’s common to find ladies carrying bouquets of flowers and for once, those without flowers seem to be out of place. Most restaurants would be fully booked, tables set for 2s, and menus catered to Couple sets. If you haven’t made a reservation, it may take a long wait to get a table for dinner. It really didn’t seem like a good day for singles.

However, there is nothing to be fearful of.

When I used to be single, I always treat Valentine’s Day as Friendship Day. It was  an enjoyable occasion – with my BFFs of course. We’d hang out with each other, find stuff to occupy our time, have a hearty meal together and it’s a day well spent! And even if my friends aren’t free, I’d make sure I find something worthwhile to do. :)

To all the singles who’re thinking of how to spend Valentine’s Day this year, don’t feel upset because there is nothing wrong with being single. It’s a personal choice to some folks who enjoy the solidarity and freedom. Or, it could be that the right one hasn’t come by yet. Good things come to those who wait.

If you’re thinking about how you can spend Valentine’s Day, here are some ideas:

  1. Pamper yourself. Treat yourself to a facial, spa, massage, manicure or haircut session to relax and rejuvenate.
  2. Catch a movie with your friends. Laugh it off by watching a REAL GOOD comedy. But if you wish to avoid couples in cinemas, head down to the DVD store and watch your favorite movies in the comfort of your home.
  3. Cook yourself a good mealTake this time to perfect your culinary skills. It’d be awesome if you can invite your friends to a feast.
  4. Volunteer at a Charity. Show your love to the less fortunate by volunteering – it can be as simple as talking to the old folks, reading a book to young orphans etc. There are many out there who are far more needy than we are.
  5. Sign up for a class. It’s never too late to learn something new – a new language, baking, photography etc.
  6. Go to the gym. The gym will be relatively empty, and you’d have the treadmills and weight machines all to yourself!
  7. Clean up the house. When was the last time you detox-ed your wardrobe and tidied your desk? Trust me, you’d feel much more refreshed after clearing out your junk.
  8. Read a book. If you prefer tranquility and some solidarity, pick up a good book at the bookstore/ library to read.
  9. Go for retail therapy. By and large, retail therapy works best for when we’re stressed or unhappy. Shop online or check out the latest in-store offerings along Orchard Road.
  10. Catch up on work. I really hate to suggest this, which is why it’s the last option. However, if there is nothing else that interests you, perhaps work is the best activity to occupy your attention and time.

Make the best of the day and enjoy every moment! Happy Friendship Day!
