An Irish Warrior

The Irish have a vibrant and colourful history filled with distinctive characters and a style all their own. I have, in my family, a strong history and heritage from the Emerald Isle. Needless to say I was thrilled when a very good customer of mine contacted me about doing an Irish style war sword. We threw around a few ideas and details and I must say that I am very happy with the result. I have hand forged the blade from 5160 high carbon steel and heat treated it to have hard edges and a softer spine with a very soft tang. The guard and pommel are of a very typical Irish style that I have crafted in bronze. Bronze is quite nice to work with and it has a reddish sheen to it unlike the more yellow-toned brass. It is also a bit stronger than brass. The grip is an ash hardwood core with risers and a wrap of dark green leather. The blade is 38.5″ long, 2″ wide, and 0.20″ thick at the guard with a gradual distal taper to the point. It has three narrow fullers on each side. Over all the sword is about 49.75″ long and thew grip is 7.8″ long. The point of balance is right at 5.5″ from the guard giving this sword a good blade presence for cutting but still allowing for finesse and agility is action. The sword weighs four pounds exactly.
