How to wind yarn pegs: tutorial

This is a tiny tutorial to show how to wind Yarn Pegs. Its not rocket science but I’ve had a few messages about how I wind mine. I’m no expert but I can pass on the method I’m using after a bit of trial and error.

What follows in this post is a really brief photo tutorial but you can also watch a short video tutorial on my YouTube channel:

What you need to wind yarn pegs

  • Wooden pegs with a hinge – easily bought in the UK from hardware stores and places like Wilco, Home Bargains and you can get them online from loads of places, including Amazon.
  • The yarn you want to wind – just use as much as you need from the ball, don’t pre-cut lengths.
  • Scissors – I got my lovely ones here
  • Fine liner pen with permanent ink to write the colour name. Check it doesn’t bleed too much on a spare peg.

Clip the end of the Yarn onto the peg, leaving a tail end of about 2cm (just under an inch)

Hold the tail end along the centre of the peg with one hand and start winding with the other

Carry on winding, doing a few extra rounds to fill the peg groove. Then wind over the hinge, but leave space at the bottom of the peg to write the colour

Start winding back up the peg to give it a second coat of yarn. Wind all the way to the top, covering any gaps

Cut the yarn to a length of about 5cm (2 inches). Pull the tail end firmly through the peg end while trying to open the peg with your other hand. This will help lodge the tail end.

Cut off the tail end close to the peg and your peg is wound!

Write the name of the colourway on both sides of the bottom of the peg. Or add the colourway on one side and the yarn brand on the other.
