Porsche Patents Active Rear Diffuser

Many of the Porsche models already have active aero elements, for example, a rear spoiler, and the new patent application of the Germans also indicates that the company is working on an active diffuser. Originally, Porsche applied for its invention on September 27, 2016, and on April 27 this year it was published by the US Patent and Trademark Office.

According to the Porsche application, the active diffusers already exist under the car, but they “are very cumbersome with respect to installation and integration in the lower body area.” The new Porsche  diffuser would move directly under the bumper and would have a concave interior shape, so it could hide in the body when it’s not in use. In case of necessity, the diffuser would “opened” and effectively correct the air flows around the tail part of the car.

According to Porsche, and depending on the layout, there may be several such “flaps”, and each of them can function independently. There is also a version with one continuous diffuser.

“The embodiment that runs over the entire width of the rear end may be implemented, for example, in vehicles without exhaust-gas tailpipes, such as electric vehicles,” the filing reads.

It is worth noting that the patented technology of Porsche is a bit like the active aerodynamic system of Aerodinamica Lamborghini Attiva (ALA) from Huracan Performante. Of course, the ALA has a slightly different principle of action: the aerodynamic system of Italians changes the angles of active dampers in the front spoiler, air ducts and rear wing, thereby adjusting the downforce of the car depending on specific road conditions and speed.

In any case, the registration of a patent is not yet a guarantee that the technology is on the way to production. But, it seems, that such a system could really be ideal for Porsche sports cars, 911 GT3 for instance …
