Fegg Hayes metal detector unearths coins dating back to reign of King James the First

TYRE-FITTER John Webb is celebrating after unearthing treasure dating back to the reign of some of England’s most famous monarchs – with a Metal detector.

Mr Webb began the hobby only two years ago and has already found bronze age weapons, Roman coins and ancient jewellery.

Now the 44-year-old from Fegg Hayes has discovered two shillings dating back to the time of English kings James 1 Charles 1 – more than 400 years ago.

Metal Detecter finds cannon balls in Devon river

Terry Waddup of Exeter came up with a load of cannon balls when he took to checking the mud in a Devon river. But it was the one that got away that proved the talking point when Terry presented his findings at Isca Metal Detecting Club.

Terry who is club secretary found a number of cannon balls in the mud of the River Tamar and brought them along. He explained how he decided to leave his biggest find where it lay, an 80lb cannon ball.

Treasure hunter strikes gold at Westward Ho!

A NORTH Devon treasure hunter has struck gold after discovering what is thought to be the second largest golden nugget ever to be found in Britain.
Merlin Cadogan, 40, from Northam, believes the lump of gold-coloured metal unearthed on Westward Ho! beach, could be worth around £1,000, writes Sarah Howells.

He made the discovery while wading in the Sandy Gut area a week last Monday (March 10) – and chemical tests on the 37.7g find indicate it is at least 18 carat gold.

Merlin, who spends around four hours a day detecting, said: “The detector went off and I was digging for ages – I was about to give up and thought I’d have one more go.
