Karin's Baby Shower

Karin is having a boy, and Karin is not an overly girlie girl. She wanted a Super Hero themed cake for her baby shower. So finding baby like super hero's to vaguely  copy fondant figurines from was not too hard.

I had no idea which characters are Marvel vs DC comics. Karin soon informed me they had to be marvel, & that mixing DC characters in was unacceptable!

Other pressures added were having to use my new kitchen including a new, much much smaller oven. I based the cake size on fitting all tiers in for one bake only...

I was too rushed to take progress photos, but basically I started with all the base tiers. The single most time consuming element as the vertical red stripes on the bottom tier, cutting them out with a ruler took forever. I used a pasta maker to roll the fondant thin though so it was neat. I also used Satin Ice pre-coloured fondant for the 1st time.

The rest was just stars and more variations of stripes stuck on in repetitive sequences with flower glue.

Construction of each character was done with legs placed down 1st, a supporting skewer through the cake to old the torso & head, then roughly shaped with clay sculpting tools

Finer details like eyes and boot laces were done with an edible black marker.

The writing was done with laser cut scrap-book lettering, not edible, but wouldn't kill you if you did!
