How to Change Colors in Crochet (Or Add a New Ball of Yarn)

Have you ever wondered how to change colors in Crochet or simply add a new ball of Yarn without creating a mess of your project? You can actually change or add yarn at any point in your crochet project and today I’m going to teach you two different easy methods for you to try the next time you need to change yarn color.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED:

  • Yarn
  • Crochet Hook
  • Tapestry Needle

How to Change Colors in Crochet- First Method

This is actually the method I prefer (it all comes down to personal preference, there’s really no wrong or right way) when joining yarn in crochet. The reason I favor this method so much is due to its end result which secure and shows very little difference where yarn colors are changed.

Great For: Crocheting stripes

First begin by working the final stitch using your current yarn color until you only have two remaining loops on your hook and then stop.

Next, using the current yarn color and the new yarn color held together, yarn over with both colors and pull them through the loop on your crochet hook at the same time. *Make sure to leave a six inch tail of the new yarn, which should hang off the back of your hook.

Then pull both yarn colors through the loop on your hook to finish the stitch.

Drop the old yarn color and continue to crochet as directed in your pattern with the new yarn color only.

Last, Weave in the old and new yarn color tails with your tapestry needle.

*When changing yarn at the end of a row, make a turning chain with your new color and then turn. If you don’t know how to make a turning chain or just need to brush up, check out our easy tutorial “Crochet How To | Crochet Turning Chain (Turning a Row)”.

How to Change Colors in Crochet- Second Method

The first method involves connecting the middle of the stitches while weaving in the yarn tail on the backside of the stitches.

First, add the new yarn color after creating the last stitch with the current color being used. This is the area where you’ll pull through the yarn to finish that particular stitch.

Continue crocheting

Next, tie the yarn on the other side.

Last step is simply weaving the ends in the stitches.

*If you end up changing yarn color in the middle of a row, continue working across the row as normal.

Final Words

Bookmark this guide so you can easily access it. Use it the first few times you change yarn colors or add a new ball of yarn to your project. I recommend trying both methods first and then deciding which method you prefer.

Always weave in your ends after joining yarn because the stitch that contains the two combined yarns may be fragile. Once you securely weave your ends in the stitch will stay where it’s supposed to.
