How to Crochet: Crochet Turning Chain (Turning a Row)

How to Crochet | Crochet Turning Chain (Turning a Row)

When I was in the process of  learning how to Crochet just  the thought of crochet turning chain, literally made my stomach sick! What if my stitches unravel?!” “I barely know how to crochet and now I’m supposed to be turning a row?” (honestly, it sounded offensive!)

If you’re just beginning your journey down the fibrous road of crochet (or still new to the process), you may be experiencing similar feelings and that’s perfectly OK! You found yourself in the right place (here of course!) and I’m about to explain how to make a turning chain. So, please, do me a favor—RELAX! Everything’s going to be just fine! Now, grab your crochet hook, yarn and an open mind! Let’s begin!

How to Crochet | Understanding Stitch Height

In order to turn a chain, you need to first understand how it directly correlates with the stitch height. The height of a stitch is exactly how it sounds.

Since crochet stitches can be quite monstrously tall, we use chain stitches at the beginning or the end of a crocheted row  to obtain the required stitch height needed for your pattern. And this is where the term ‘turning chains’ comes from because their made before or after turning your crochet work at the end of a row.

Turning chains also helps you keep the edges of your project nice, neat and even!

With me so far? Good!

How to Crochet | How Many Stitches Does It Take Turning Chain?

The number of stitches needed for the turning chain is added to the number required in the foundation chain for a particular crochet pattern. Each stitch has it’s own specific number of turning chains needed at the beginning or end of the row.

So, let’s say for example we have a row of 5 half double crochet stitches, the foundation row will consists of 7 chains. A row that has 5 single crochet stitches will have a foundation row with 6 chains (just simple addition).

However, some crochet patterns may specify a different way to make the chains.

How to Crochet: Rule of Thumb

I use this rule of thumb—if the crochet pattern doesn’t not specifically state this information, in most cases, I usually follow the guide below.

Use this chart simply as a guide. As you become a more experienced crocheter, you’re likely to find your own personal preference (such as using less chains to create a turning chain).

How to Crochet | Final Words

I hope this mini tutorial clears up any confusion or fears you had about turning chains. It’s really a very simple process once you have a better understanding of what you’re doing. Now, that you have the  low down on turning chains, put it to good use,—but first take a moment to turn around and pat yourself on the back!
