Happy National Thesaurus Day!

Happy National Thesaurus Day!  I got my first thesaurus in 1969 and have always had one sitting by my computer though I usually don’t use it more than a few times a year.  When you need a word, YOU NEED A WORD.  LOL.

I wish I would have chosen to feature the word “subtle” instead of “happy” because I just remembered a funny story that has stuck with me every time I say that word. My problem was the silent “B”.  The good thing is way back then I understood what subtle meant, but I made the mistake of saying the word to a professor “sub-tle” instead of “sut-tle” and she responded to me in a fury I will never forget.

“Sub-tle”, you idiot it’s “sut-tle”!  I was really glad she didn’t have a hot brand with which to scorch the correct pronunciation across my forehead!  The cool thing is I try to make every mistake just once.  LOL.

I made a free printable greeting card (click and print below) in honor of National Thesaurus Day.  The National Calendar tells what the day is all about:

NATIONAL THESAURUS DAY

National Thesaurus Day is observed annually on January 18 in honor of Peter Mark Roget, the author of Roget’s Thesaurus, who was born on this day in 1779.  In 1840, Roget retired from a successful career in medicine and spent the rest of his life working on “Roget’s Thesaurus of English Words and Phrases.” He published his first book of synonyms in 1852.

The thesaurus has been used for centuries by writers and poets to help make their writing come to life.

Whether you are looking for a new word or trying to complete a sentence, the thesaurus can be your best friend. Expanding your vocabulary improves both written and spoken communication skills, creative writing abilities and can be helpful in advancing your career.

HOW TO OBSERVE

Use a thesaurus to replace a word in your writing.  Use #NationalThesaurusDay to post on social media.
