10 accounting courses that’ll leave your POA days in the dust

Looking for a course to prepare for a qualification? Or looking for a course to help you get one foot into the industry? If you’re at a loss at where to start, we’ve got you covered.

We’ve assembled a starter list of courses that you could consider (yes, even polytechnic diplomas!) While we haven’t listed everything out there—because there’s really a whole lot of options— we hope we’ve introduced some possibilities (and qualifications) that you can explore. Without further ado:

Preparatory Courses for Professional Qualifications

1. London School of Business and Finance (Singapore) – Preparatory Course for ACCA

LSBF Singapore is a branch campus of the London School of Business and Finance. It has received the Platinum Approved Learning Partner Status by the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA), and is a popular choice for those seeking ACCA tuition. Classes are taught via lectures, simulations as well as independent study, and students will have access to online resources like tutor notes and videos to aid their learning. LSBF also offers prepatory courses for the Singapore Chartered Accountant (CA) qualification. The institution is EduTrust certified.

Course Fees (up to 30% off for jan 2019 intake) :

For full-time students

  • $850 for each Knowledge Paper
  • $1150 for each Skills Paper
  • $1270 for Strategic Business Reporting and $2100 for Strategic Business Leader Papers
  • $1270 for each Options Paper

For part-time students:

  • $600 for each Knowledge Paper
  • $765 for each Skills Paper
  • $850 for Strategic Business Reporting and $1400 for Strategic Business Leader Papers
  • $850 for each Options Paper

Curriculum: –

Duration: 36 months (full-time and part-time)

Prospects: Upon passing all papers and becoming ACCA qualification holders, students could go on to pursue the ACCA/Oxford Brookes University BSc (Hons) in Applied Accounting – Mentorship Programme.

2. Institute of Singapore Chartered Accountants – ISCA Accredited Accounting Technician (Singapore) qualification

These are training classes for those looking to attain the Accredited Accounting Technician qualification, which is globally recognized. There are flexible learning options with ISCA-AAT, with graduates of the program being able to become members of both ISCA (affiliate) and the Associate of Accounting Technicians (AAT). AAT qualification holders are also eligible for exemptions for the ACCA, CIMA and ICAEW qualifications.

Course Fees: $86 per unit assessment and $112 per synoptic assessment for Foundation level, $112 per unit assessment for Advanced level, $112 per unit assessment and $118 per synoptic assessment for Professional level. An admission fee of $118 and annual student membership fee of $171/calendar year is also payable. There are a few funding support options.

Curriculum: Consists of 3 levels: Foundation, Advanced and Professional (a total of 16 modules)
Duration:

Prospects: If all levels are completed, you can apply for roles such as Senior Accounts Executive, Cost Accountant, Financial Analyst as well as Payroll Manager.

3. FTMSGlobal Singapore – Singapore Charted Accountant preparatory course

The CA qualification is hard, so if you need some help consider going for a prep course. FTMSGlobal is an Authorised Training Organisation (ATO) for the qualification and is EduTrust certified. A global campus spanning 5 countries in Asia, FTMS was established in Singapore in 1986 and was the first in the world to develop and deliver online training for ACCA (preparatory courses for ACCA are also offered here). The institution is EduTrust certified.

Course Fees: Please enquire directly with the institution.

Curriculum: The course covers the Professional portion of the CA qualification (the 4 Technical modules), as well as the Capstone Module (Integrative Business)

Duration: 3 months technical and 1 month for revision

4. Kaplan Singapore — Preparatory Courses for Foundation in Accountancy (FIA)

Firstly, the FIA is a suite of awards from ACCA (the organization) comprising of certificates, a Diploma, and a Certified Accounting Technician (CAT) qualification. Thereafter, Diploma and Certified Accounting Technician (CAT) holders will be eligible for direct entry into the Applied Skills level of the ACCA Professional Scheme. Kaplan Singapore is a Platinum Approved ACCA Learning Partner and won the Best Corporate Training Provider in the HRM Asia Reader’s Choice Awards 2018. The institution is EduTrust certified.

Course Fees: $500-700 per module
Curriculum: –

Duration: 13-20 sessions per module

Prospects:  Those that pass and attain the FIA qualifications can go on to enroll for the ACCA qualifications, or find jobs in the accountancy industry depending on how many qualifications have been successfully completed. Roles range from junior accounting and bookkeeping roles, to supervisory or management roles.

Full-time Diplomas

1. Temasek Polytechnic – Diploma in Accountancy & Finance

Temasek Polytechnic promises a hands-on and industry-relevant curriculum for its Diploma in Accountancy & Finance. Part of its School of Business offerings, course grads will be able to obtain exemptions for coursework at the Bachelor’s Degree level (subject to each university) as well as exemptions for professional qualifications like ACCA, CIMA, ICAEW, ICSA and CMFAS.

Course Fees: 2,894.10 for locals, 5,724.10 for PRs, 10,160.20 for international students (per year)

Curriculum: Study modules like Business Technology & Analytics, International Finance, and Advanced Accounting. Students are also required to take up a 20-week internship.

Duration: 3 years

Prospects: TP’s accountancy students have, according to the school, gone on to read Accountancy at the degree level in both local and overseas higher education institutions. They have also entered the workforce or have the option to pursue the SkillsFuture Earn and Learn Programme, which leads to Ngee Ann Polytechnic’s Advanced Diploma in Accountancy— giving them the eligibility to enroll for the Singapore Chartered Accountant (SCA) professional qualification that’s currently open to only degree holders.

2. Ngee Ann Polytechnic—Diploma in Accountancy

Ngee Ann Polytechnic’s School of Business & Accountancy has been around since 1963 (whoa). Often regarded as a Polytechnic with strong business courses, what’s especially appealing is their 6-months Enhanced Internship Programme, where students could intern with the Big 4 Accounting Entities here, or other reputable accounting firms and banks like Standard Charted and RSM. Course grads will be able to obtain exemptions for coursework at the Bachelor’s Degree level (subject to each university) as well as exemptions for professional qualifications like ACCA (6 exemptions) and CIMA.

Course Fees: $2,800 for locals, $5,600 for PRs, $10,000 for international students (per year)

Curriculum: Modules such as Macroeconomics, Cost Accounting, Financial Management, Taxation. Students will also undergo a 6-month internship.

Duration: 3 years

Prospects: Similar to TP (see above).

3. Nanyang Polytechnic – Diploma in Accountancy & Finance

NYP’s Diploma in Accountancy & Finance has an interesting programme that we’re highlighting here: the NYP-ACCA Accelerated Pathway Programme. This programme is a collaboration with both parties (NYP and ACCA), which allows NYP students to start their journey towards acquiring the ACCA professional qualification before graduation. The programme also partners with Ernst & Young (EY) to offer an enhanced internship programme. Course grads will be able to obtain exemptions for coursework at the Bachelor’s Degree level (subject to each university) as well as exemptions for professional qualifications like ACCA (6 exemptions), CIMA (7) and ICAEW (7). This is currently the highest amount of exemptions available to any polytechnic diploma.

Course Fees: $2,885.40 for locals, $ 5,715.40 for PRs, $ 10,151.50 for international students (per year)

Curriculum: Study modules such as International Business, Social Customer Relationship Management, International Business, as well as Social Customer Relationship Management

Duration: 3 years

Prospects: Similar to TP (see above).

4. Singapore Polytechnic – Diploma in Accountancy

Singapore’s first polytechnic offers a Diploma in Accountancy, too! It promises an exciting life to students with overseas learning experiences (like a 2-week China immersion programme to see how businesses operate) and industry relevant working experiences (client development projects, internships, etc), as well as an SP Accountancy Chapter for student activities and events. Course grads will be able to obtain exemptions for coursework at the Bachelor’s Degree level (subject to each university) as well as exemptions for professional qualifications like ACCA, CIMA and ICAEW (see below).

Course Fees: $2,890.55 for locals, $2,890.55 for PRs, $10,156.65 for international students

Curriculum: Study modules like Business Negotiation Skills, Communications for Professional Effectiveness, Financial Management, as well as Cost & Management Accounting. There will also be a mandatory 22-week internship.

Duration: 3 years

Part-time Diplomas

1. Singapore Polytechnic – Diploma in Business Practice (Accounting)

This is a course for working professionals who do not have tertiary qualifications, that desire to upskill or take on accountancy-related jobs. To bring students up to speed, the diploma will give an overview on business and go into the fundamentals of accounting, IT and Data Analysis, Audit and Assurance, and others. All applicants will be required to go for an interview and/or an entrance test. Laptops are required.

Course Fees: $2,354.55 (locals below 40 years old), $1,569.70 (locals above 40 years old), $6,278.75 for PRs. You might pay less depending on initiatives you are eligible for.

Curriculum: Made up of 5 modular courses: Certificate in Business Fundamentals, Certificate in Business and Technology, Certificate in Business Management, Certificate in Business and Corporate Finance, Certificate in Business and Accounting Services.

Duration: 2.5 years minimum, 5 years max

Prospects: Students will graduate with a Diploma and can go on to apply for relevant part-time Undergraduate courses at SUSS.

2. Ngee Ann Polytechnic – Advanced Diploma in Accountancy

Launched in 2015, Ngee Ann Polytechnic’s Advanced Diploma in Accountancy is a joint collaboration between the former and the Singapore Accountancy Commission (SAC). It is part of the SkillsFuture Earn- and-Learn Programmes where students will work in reputable accounting firms (EY, KPMG, etc) to earn a competitive starting salary and receive on-the-job training while studying. They will have the chance to enroll for the Singapore CA Qualification to attain the Chartered Accountant of Singapore designation thereafter, which is only open to Degree holders otherwise.

Course Fees: This is a company sponsored programme.

Curriculum: Made up of 4 post-diploma certificates: PDC in Financial Reporting & Tax, PDC in Financial Management & Accounting for Decision Making, PDC in Advanced Financial Reporting & Assurance, PDC in Accounting Practice (comprises industry practicum done concurrently with the other PDCs).

Duration: 18 months
