TCM Effected At Epilepsy

This is an acute attack of neurological disturbance with loss of consciousness after suddenly falling down, emission of foamy saliva, upward staring, convulsions of the limbs, a noise like the bleating of a goat from the mouth, and complete recovery of physical and mental condition after resuscitation.

It can be divided into 2 types: Patients of epilepsy due to accumulation of wind pathogens and phlegm may suffer from sudden falling down, loss of consciousness, convulsions, drooling, screaming and incontinence of urine and stool, they usually have a strong physical constitution with much sputum in the body; and patients of epilepsy due to deficiency of the spleen and kidneys may suffer from repeated relapses of chronic seizure, pale complexion, dementia, poor memory, mental tiredness and weak pulse.
These condition correspond to primary and secondary epilepsy in Western medicine.

Recipe 1: Twelve fresh olives and Mingfan (alum) 1.5 g.
Administration: The olives are washed clean, and few grooves are carved on their surfaces with a knife and filled with powder of alum. One or 2 olives may be sucked and chewed after the alum is dissolved, and.absorbed once every hour.
Indication: The olive with alum can clear heat, eliminate phlegm and control convulsions to treat epilepsy due to accumulation of wind pathogens and phlegm.

Recipe 2: Red tangerine peel 10 g, earthworm 10 g, Zhizi (cape-jasmine fruit) 5 g and rice 100 g.
Administration: The first 3 herbs are separately ground to prepare 3 powders, and tangerine peel powder is added first to the boiling water with rice for making gruel, and powder of earthworm and Zhizi is added to the boiling gruel just before it is well done. This gruel is taken by mouth twice a day.
Indication: This gruel can clear heat from the liver, calm wind and promote discharge of sputum to treat epilepsy due to accumulation of wind and phlegm.

Recipe 3: Dried tangerine peel 10 g, raw ginseng 10 and sugar 30 g.
Administration: The decoction of tangerine peel and ginseng is constantly drunk as a tea after being mixed with sugar.
Indication: This tonic can tonify the kidneys, strengthen the spleen, and enrich Qi and blood to treat epilepsy due to deficiency of Qi and blood.
