Dental implant Surgery – What you can expect 15 Tips?

As a dental practice, we at Vita Dental perform dental Implant surgery quite often. The procedure is an effective way for us to give our patients the smile they have always desired. Dental implants are quite durable and can last a lifetime if the patient takes good care of them. Here are a few important tips about dental implant surgery that we think you should know.

  1. It is an outpatient procedure

That means you will get to go home after the operation. As a result, we advise you to arrange on how you are going to get back home. Some patients may be too drugged after the operation to operate a car.

  1. The damaged tooth has to be removed

The dentist takes extreme care to get rid of all fragments of any damaged tooth. During the surgery, the dentist is guided by scans of your teeth that he/she took. That way, the dentist can tell if they have gotten all the pieces out. A visual inspection is conducted to confirm this.

  1. The area of the damaged tooth is examined

A visual inspection is usually conducted. If the doctor sees any signs of infection, the area has to be sealed. You will be given medication to help the area heal from the infection before the operation can take place.

  1. Images of the jawbone are taken to determine if it is good enough for an implant

The process entails taking x-rays that can be used to determine bone density. If the bone is thick enough, the process of drilling through the jaw and placing the implant goes on as planned.

  1. A bone graft is required

Sometimes, the only solution is a bone graft. This helps to increase the thickness of the bone allowing for an easy time when placing the implant. You may need to heal for about six months before moving to the next stage of the operation.

  1. The surgeon will place the implant after the bone heals

When the graft has fused with the jawbone, the surgeon will now place the implant into the jaw. The procedure is done in one day, and you are released to go home. You will have to wait for a while as the implant fuses with the bone.

  1. An abutment is installed

Once the implant fuses with the bone, you go for an operation to place an abutment on top of the implant. This is the part where a crown will be attached.

  1. Attaching the crown

When the gum around the abutment heals, a crown will be attached. It can be a permanent crown or a removable crown, which is taken out occasionally for cleaning.

  1. You should expect some bleeding

A bit of bleeding is normal after the surgery. This is especially so because the wound in the mouth cannot be closed. However, excessive bleeding is not expected and should be an issue of concern.

  1. You will experience some pain

After the surgery, there is going to be some latent pain from the operation. To cope with it, the doctor will give you some pain medication for a few days.

  1. An ice pack over the jaw can help the pain subside

Pain medication will not always work after an operation. Thus, you may need to place an ice pack over the jaw where you just had an operation. It is quite useful in helping to alleviate excessive pain.

  1. Your mouth will feel a bit awkward at first

For a few weeks after the surgery, you will feel a bit of awkwardness in the mouth. However, you should avoid prodding at implant with your tongue or fingers. It will cause it to shift out of position, and it may fall off.

  1. The surgery could be canceled

During the examination before the surgery, the doctor may come upon some facts that force him or her to cancel the surgery. For instance, he may notice telltale signs of diabetes in the patient before surgery, which will force a cancellation. Besides that, if he notices a sign of infection in neighboring teeth, he could cancel the operation.

  1. You will be given a special diet guideline for the healing period

After the implant is in place, the doctor will probably give you a detailed guide on foods you should avoid. For instance, crunchy food will definitely be on the list. Anything that could affect your gums’ ability to heal will also be excluded. For instance, foods rich in sugars and acids may be excluded from your menu for a few weeks.

  1. Checkups are recommended

After the implant is in place, you will need to go for a few regular check-ups. These are done to confirm that the implant is not shifting position. Besides that, it helps the doctor to see if the implant is having an adverse reaction on the patient. Although rare, the implant can refuse to fuse with the bone.

If you are getting the dental implants treatment so all the things here we discussed that you know before, if still you have any query don’t hesitate ask freely.
