Male infertility: Causes, Treatment, and Prevention

As human society is developing to new milestones each day, we’re also creating problems in terms of environment and our own health. Working professionals in current age have long working hours, hectic commutes, numerous housing issues and no time for a social life. The rapid urbanization and economic growth in the city have caused life to become constantly busy and stressful.

All this stress has impacted human health in myriad ways, some of which include Infertility issues, and lifestyle diseases such as obesity, diabetes, and hypertension. Male infertility is on the rise in India, and it accounts for 40% of the overall fertility problems.

Causes of Male Infertility

Fertility problems in men can be caused by various factors such as:

Stress: Stress is a major factor that contributes to male fertility. Men living in urban areas have been found to have higher rates of infertility than their rural-dwelling counterparts. One of the causes of this could be stress and anxiety due to the hustle and bustle of city life. Stress has shown to lower the sperm quality drastically in men.

Pollution: Pollution in major cities is also a contributor to male fertility problems. Chemicals and particulate matter in the environment can cause hormonal imbalances in the body and reduce sperm quality and motility.

Unhealthy lifestyle: Alcohol consumption, tobacco and drug use also affect male sperm quality and hormones like testosterone.

Lifestyle diseases: The downside of the stress and anxiety of city life is the increasing occurrence of diseases like diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure etc. These diseases also affect men’s ability to reproduce. Wearing very tight clothes and exercising too much can also lead to problems with male fertility.

Internal problems: Other causes of issues with male fertility are problems such as sexually transmitted diseases, infections, tumours, hormonal imbalance, anti-sperm antibodies, and Varicocele. Anti-sperm antibodies are immune cells in the body that mistakenly attack sperm cells. Varicocele is the most easily reversible cause of Male Infertility, where swelling in the veins causes the testicle to drain.

Sexual and ejaculation problems: Many men may suffer from problems like painful or premature ejaculation, retrograde ejaculation where semen enters the bladder instead of coming out, anatomical problems, and relationship issues that can cause difficulties while trying to conceive.

Treatment

Most male infertility related issues are preventable or treatable. If a couple has been trying to conceive for a while without success, it is a good idea to seek professional help. The man should undergo male fertility test to determine the cause of infertility. A certified fertility specialist will then guide the person through various treatment options. Good thing is that there are well-reputed fertility centers in most parts of India, especially in metros like Mumbai, Delhi etc. where these tests can be carried out by qualified doctors and fertility specialists.
