FAQ Special – Dermal Fillers

What is a dermal filler?

As we age our skin loses collagen, causing loss of volume and creases or wrinkles, a Dermal filler is an injectable soft tissue filler that is used to help reduce the appearance of wrinkles on the face.

Dermal Fillers consist of an injectable gel substance that is medically designed to imitate hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance that helps to keep skin stable, locks in moisture and also helps with renewing and healing skin. Dermal Fillers such as Sculptra, Belotero, Juvederm and Restylane are designed to work with your existing hyaluronic acid to add volume and smooth wrinkles on the face.

What can dermal fillers be used to treat?

  • Increasing volume in the lips
  • Increasing volume in the cheeks and around the jowl area
  • Tear trough (adding volume to the sunken area beneath the eye)
  • Smile lines/crow’s feet (smoothing creases at the corners of the eyes)
  • Frown lines (filling creases between the eyebrows)
  • Filling small lines around the mouth
  • Reducing the appearance of the crease from the corner of the nose to the corner of the mouth

What does the treatment feel like and how long does it take?

Dermal fillers are injected using a very fine needle to minimise discomfort, the sensation is most commonly compared to a sharp scratch. Some fillers contain anaesthetic within the injection to ensure the treatment is as pain free as possible.

Depending on the area treatments normally take from 30 minutes to an hour.

How long does it take to see the results?

In most cases it can take around two weeks for the fillers to settle and give visible results, however this can vary from person to person.

Will it leave a mark?
