Getting rid of your post-baby stretch marks

If  you’ve got Stretch Marks, you probably wish they would just disappear. While these common grooves or lines around the breasts, hips, thighs, arms, abdomen, buttocks, or back won’t do you harm, they aren’t esthetically pleasing and many people who have them suffer a blow to their confidence. Up until just a few years ago, there weren’t any very effective treatment protocols for stretch marks, but thanks to new and advanced approaches, you can expect a 30-75% reduction of their appearance. Rather than allowing stretch marks to dictate how you dress, or whether you feel comfortable in a bathing suit, opt for a series of powerful laser treatments and do away with stretch marks in just 4-6 monthly sessions. While stretch marks do sometimes fade somewhat on their own, this can take years and is not guaranteed.

Stretch mark visibility reduction with advanced laser treatments

Whether your stretch marks are purple/red indicating their relative newness, or white/silver atrophic stretch marks that have developed over a more extended period, these are areas of your skin that have been stretched beyond their elastic recoil potential. The most common causes are rapid growth of the skin is due to pregnancy, weight loss or gain, growth spurts related to puberty, stretching associated with breast growth, or even the quick expansion of muscle from weight training. At SpaMedica in Toronto, removing stretch marks or reducing their visibility is expertly accomplished with laser treatments. Typically, Dr. Mulholland will recommend a combination approach that works from both above and below, along with fractional resurfacing and skin tightening technologies for the best possible results. Once your series of treatments are complete, a simple maintenance session is encouraged once every 4-6 months.

Marks that are red or purple in colour are treated with vascular lasers once every 3-4 weeks. After each treatment, red marks may appear darker for 1-2 weeks before they begin to fade. Treating your stretch marks when they are red or purple helps to stimulate new collagen and elastin production, which in turn prevents their progression into a white or silver stretch mark. White stretch marks are a type of hypotrophic scar and can cause the skin to appear thin, old, waxy, and flimsy. The good news is, Dr. Mulholland has pioneered two ultra-revolutionary approaches to treating white stretch marks: top-down and bottom-up. The former uses fractional resurfacing lasers and radiofrequency devices to stimulate the production of new collagen and elastin from the surface inward, while the latter  achieves the same with subdermal heating technologies to heat the skin from underneath, or from the bottom up, with a tightening effect to boot.
