Bhastrika Pranayam (Bellows Breath)

The Sanskrit word Bhastrika means “Bellows.” Therby, this pranayam is also called bellows breaths. As the air is forcefully drawn in and out of the lungs.

What is so special about Bhastrika Pranayam

This breathing technique increases the flow of air into the body. Which produces inner heat at both the physical and subtle levels. Thus, stroking the inner fire of the body and mind.

Benefits of Bhastrika Pranayam

  • This practice activates the brain and induces clarity of thought and concentration.
  • It increases vitality and lower anxiety and stress levels. As the energy is raised and the prana is in harmony.
  • It clears the pranic blockages; which helps in meditation and increases consciousness.

  • Bhastrika is a balancing technique. Therfore, it helps in correcting any imbalances in the three doshas . That is  vata, pitta and kapha.

Contra-indications

  •  Bhastrika should never be done on a full stomach or before sleeping. It revs up the nervous system, which could meddle in relaxing the body for sleep.
  • As this generates heat in the system.  People with hypertension and heart issues should avoid it.
  • Pregnant women should also steer clear of it.
  • Don’t practice Bhastrika while you’re undergoing a migraine attack.
