A Recipe for Recovery

Tags: recovery detox

Everyone has their own unique situation, but here’s a “recipe” that I have found useful when it comes to Recovery, whether you need Xanax detox, and opiate addiction, or are abusing any other substance.

Ingredients

  • Acceptance of the need for change
  • Someone you can talk with who can validate your experiences
  • Allowing yourself to cry or express your emotions and truth
  • Skilled professionals who can help you with an evidence-based approach through detox
  • A plan to avoid relapse
  • A friend or sponsor who will set boundaries and hold you responsible to your recovery
  • And the final secret ingredient: vulnerability. You must be able to open up and accept that change may not come in the form you want…and that’s okay.

Instructions

  1. The first and most important step is accepting that change needs to happen. For some people this means hitting rock bottom, but if you can avoid letting it get that far all the better.
  2. Get help. This might mean have a talk with a friend or call a recovery center.
  3. Detox. Best done with skilled medical professionals who understand exactly what you’re going through.
  4. Change your lifestyle. This is easier said than done. If you relapse, don’t focus on it and let it spiral out of control again, instead get right back into the path to recovery.
  5. Modify your friend circle. This may include removing toxic people, even family members, and bringing in people who support your recovery. It is important to have people that will enforce boundaries with love and hold you accountable.
  6. Learn new coping skills and ways to manage your stress. Meditation, yoga, going to the gym are great. Maybe you can even pick up hobbies you stopped doing because of the addiction.
  7. Recognize that recovery is a permanent part of your life now and these changes must be there for good.
  8. Never forget that you’re not alone.
