Many people think of periodontal disease as an adult problem. But this is a problem which you can see in children. Just as its name implies, periodontal disease comprise a group of infection that affect the periodontal tissue, we say the supporting structures of the teeth.

Types of periodontal disease-

1-Gingiva- Gingivitis is the first stage of periodontal disease which is nearly a universal finding in children
2- Periodontal ligament- Periodontal ligament space is wider in children and is less fibrous and more vascular
3- Cementum - Cementum is the 3rd of the dental hard tissues, it derived from the dental follicle.
4-Alveolar bone- Alveolar bone proper forms the tooth socket, and depending on which aspect of its structure or function you want to emphazise it can be called by different names.

Signs of periodontal disease-

Four basic signs will alert you to periodontal disease in your child:
1- Bleeding - Bleeding of the gums, even during brushing, flossing or any other time is a sign of inflammation and the major marker of periodontal disease. This is caused by toxins created by bacteria that irritate the gums making them tender and can lead to bleeding.
2- Puffiness - Red and Swollen Gums.
3- Gum Recession and Loose Teeth - As the disease advances the gums recede, and supporting structure of bone is lost. Teeth loosen, sometimes causing a change in the way the upper and lower teeth fit together when biting down or how partial dentures fit.
4- Bad Breath - Bad breath can also be made worse by the types of foods you eat and other unhealthy lifestyle habits. Constant bad breath that does not clear up with brushing and flossing.
