To better and more directly categorize the location of the organ surrounded by the Mesothelium Membrane, Mesothelium is commonly referred to in the medical profession by several different names in order to accurately identify the location of the Mesothelium within the body. The following are the various names used to identify the location of the Mesothelium within the body:
- Peritoneum describes the Mesothelium membrane that covers most of the organs in the abdominal cavity;
- Pleura describes the Mesothelium membrane surrounding the lungs and lining the wall of the chest cavity;
- Pericardium describes the Mesothelium membrane surrounding the heart;
- Tunica vaginalis testis describes the Mesothelium membrane surrounding the male internal reproductive organs; and
- Tunica serosa uteri describes the Mesothelium membrane surrounding the internal reproductive organs in women.
