Family Favorite Easy Buttermilk Pie For Best Buttermilk Chess Pie Recipe

Growing up my grandmother would make an easy Buttermilk Pie with this brown sugar Streusel Topping Recipe for every special occasion. Besides it being so moist and delicious, it was my mother’s favorite dessert. Now, of course, I have made this Buttermilk chess pie recipe trim and terrific in my Gulf Coast Favorites cookbook.  It is my husband’s favorite dessert so it still makes its way to our family table often. I’ll never forget the year my grandmother forgot to add the sugar to this pie – we all took a bite and knew something was different. My easy southern Buttermilk Pie recipe with brown sugar Streusel Topping recipe is delectably rich and custard-like but definitely not the same without the sugar! Buttermilk Streusel Pie from Holly Clegg’s Gulf Coast Favorites cookbook   

A crunchy brown sugar topping over a light custard pie. This is reminiscent of a Crème Brûlée, but minus all the effort. I like to serve this pie with fresh berries. This will be the best buttermilk chess pie recipe you have ever tasted!

Makes 8–10 servings

2 eggs
3/4 cup sugar
1 3/4 cups buttermilk
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 (9-inch) unbaked pie shell
Streusel Topping (recipe below)

1.Preheat oven to 325°F.
2.  In mixing bowl, beat together eggs, sugar, flour, buttermilk, and vanilla. Pour into pie shell. 
3.  Bake 30 minutes. Reduce oven temperature to 300°F. Sprinkle with Streusel Topping, and bake 50-55 minutes or until set. 
4. Turn oven to broil, broil about 2 minutes. Watch carefully. Let stand 20 minutes before serving.

Streusel Topping

1/4 cup all-purpose flour
1/3 cup light brown sugar
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 tablespoon butter, melted
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1.  In small bowl, combine all ingredients until mixture is crumbly.

Terrific Tip: Crème brûlèe consists of a custard base, topped with a hard caramel—this desert has crème brûlèe components and flavor.
