How To Help Children Practice Self Care

Oftentimes when we think of self care we think of adults. Managing work, personal life and all of the stressors that come as people get older. However, Children are not exempt from stressors of their own. It’s vital to teach our children ways to cope with stress in a healthy way so that these lessons will follow kids into adulthood. It’s essential that we teach parents and kids ways that children can incorporate self care into their everyday routines.

Here are six self care practices to help children maintain positive mental health.

  1. Learn and educate others on common mental health illnesses found in children: The most common mental health disorders found in children are Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Anxiety, Depression and Suicide. Take advantage of online mental health learning materials and educate yourself on the disorders affecting youth.
  1. Facilitate a welcoming environment for conversation: There is a stigma commonly associated with mental health that prevents people from talking about their struggles. Aid in breaking the stigma by inviting conversation without criticism. Lending an ear rather than a solution can make someone feel more understood than ever, especially a child. Perhaps conversation is at a standstill, turn to the written word to help manage fears and anxieties.
  1. Encourage engaging in physical exercise: A great stress release for children is exercise. It’s recommended that kids exercise for 60 minutes a day to maintain a healthy wellbeing. It’s not only a productive way to stay fit physically but mentally as well. Playing outside with friends or joining a club team is an excellent opportunity to work out any pent up stress.
  1. Limit technology time: Children today will not know a time without smartphones and tablets. It’s up to parents and caregivers to limit their screen time, and encourage them to engage in person to person communication. Social media, while it has its benefits can lead to constant connection and no time to disconnect. Let kids be kids and invite them to enjoy life outside of their screen.
  1. Instill a sense of responsibility: Giving children a sense of responsibility and purpose will help them to manage tasks starting from a young age. Gradually increasing what a child is responsible for will prepare them to manage tasks and responsibilities as they grow older. Learning time management and accountability will eliminate the shock factor when kids become young adults.
  1. Embrace a creative outlet: Words can be hard to use to articulate complicated feelings. Using art to express feelings can allow for children to hone in on their true feelings. Rather than internalizing emotions, they can be expressed through drawing, painting, coloring, music, dance, etc.
