All hail political correctness!
BREAKING: Associated Press (@ap) Drops ‘Illegal Immigrant’ From Stylebook uninews.us/12d6Baj
— Jordan Fabian (@Jordanfabian) April 2, 2013
AP Style tip: @ap no longer sanctions the term “illegal immigrant.” Here’s why: apne.ws/14Lm6KU
— AP Stylebook (@APStylebook) April 2, 2013
The AP has announced on its blog that it no longer sanctions the use of the term “illegal immigrant” to describe immigrants who are in this country illegally. No, really:
Note: AP doesn’t even consider the more legally precise term “illegal alien.” Its focus was the already-inaccurate “illegal immigrant.”
— Gabriel Malor (@gabrielmalor) April 2, 2013
Unbelievable.
So there are legal immigrants and the other kind.
— Josh Greenman (@joshgreenman) April 2, 2013
So the @ap has defined exactly what illegal immigration is and then goes on to say, but you can only use that when describing the ‘act’.
— LilMissRightie (@LilMissRightie) April 2, 2013
sub-legal immigrants. #NewAPGuidelines

“‘Stalker’ is now to be ‘Person who really just wants to be loved, and that’s okay.’” #NewAPStyle
— Sonny Bunch (@SonnyBunch) April 2, 2013
Wut? The act of being here illegally as an immigrant is as you said “an action, such as living in or immigrating to a country illegally.”
— LilMissRightie (@LilMissRightie) April 2, 2013
“Grand Theft Auto (GTA)” is now “Permanently Borrowed Without Asking (PBWA)” #NewAPStyle
— David M. Drucker (@DavidMDrucker) April 2, 2013
Why use two words when 17 will do? #APprotips
— Guy Benson (@guypbenson) April 2, 2013
So, the AP has decided “illegal immigrant” is banned. Good thing I don’t write for the AP.
— Aaron Gardner (@Aaron_RS) April 2, 2013
According to AP, my kid is no longer lazy. He just subscribes to a slothful lifestyle.
— Debbie M. (@mosesmosesmoses) April 2, 2013
@sonnybunch Murderer is out. The term “accused of unlawfully ceasing the life of another” preferred. #NewAPStyle
— Miké (@ThePantau) April 2, 2013
Refrain from the word “debt”. Instead say “monetary sum owed due to financing of super-awesome programs” #NewAPGuidelines
— Sunny (@sunnyright) April 2, 2013
No more “illegal immigrant” use. So we’re at the point where “pro-law enforcement” means “anti-immigrant bigot.” #tcot
— Razor (@hale_razor) April 2, 2013
So is a person still a felon or are their acts felonious? Where does this go?
— Nathan Wurtzel (@NathanWurtzel) April 2, 2013
Are you an illegal immigrant? The AP would not like to speak with you.
— Brett LoGiurato (@BrettLoGiurato) April 2, 2013
Welcome to the wonderful world of “real journalism,” folks.

Update:
Hey, why stop with the Associated Press? There’s so much more PC potential!
We did it, folks! AP dropped ‘illegal immigrant.’ Now it’s your move @nytimes uninews.us/12d6Baj
— Cristina Costantini (@xtinatini) April 2, 2013
You’re next, @nytimes, @latimes, @washingtonpost, @wsj. No human being is illegal. cc @ap @defineamerican
— Jose Antonio Vargas (@joseiswriting) April 2, 2013
Looks like more “nuanced” reporting could be on its way:
NYT standards editor says they’ve “been discussing some possible revisions in our guidance” on using terms like “illegal immigrant.”
— Michael Calderone (@mlcalderone) April 2, 2013
On “illegal immigrants”: I’m told that @nytimes is also working on revisions to its usage guidelines to “provide more nuance and options.”
— Margaret Sullivan (@Sulliview) April 2, 2013
Nothing would make the SEIU happier:
#TimeIsNow RT @32bj_seiu: ‘Illegal immigrant’ no more! wp.me/pjard-1G A welcome & overdue decision by @ap. @nytimes next? #CIR

Update:
Such utter lame-itude from the AP warrants major mockery. Fortunately, snarky Twitterers delivered. Enjoy!
