TMJ Disorder

The Temporomandibular Joint Disorder is a condition in which the temporomandibular joint becomes persistently inflamed. The temporomandibular joint is the joint of the jaw. This joint consists of the temporal bone and the mandible. The temporal bone is the upper part which connects to the skull, and the mandible is the lower part.

The symptoms of the temporomandibular joint disorder are:

  • Pain while biting or chewing
  • Clicking sound when the mouth is opened or closed
  • Pain in the face
  • Ear-ache
  • A headache
  • Loss of hearing
  • A migraine
  • Pain in the jaw
  • Difficulty in opening or closing the mouth
  • Tinnitus
  • Shoulder and neck pain
  • Dizziness

The causes of the temporomandibular joint disorder are:

  • Bruxism
  • Physical trauma
  • Malocclusion
  • Jaw thrusting
  • Excessive chewing of gums or habit of biting nails
  • Size of the food bites which you eat
  • Degenerative joint disease
  • Myofascial pain dysfunction syndrome
  • Lack of overbite

Preventing and getting rid of the causes of the temporomandibular Joint Disorder is the best treatment for the condition. For instance, if Bruxism is the cause, then this should be treated. The same applies if you have the condition due to any other cause. Pain-killers can also be prescribed by physicians to alleviate the pain caused by the condition.
