The Diagnosis Acceptance Rollercoaster—Confronting Anger

If you are dealing with anger following your bipolar disorder diagnosis, you are not alone—and you can learn ways to manage this symptom.

Hi everyone! This is is Linea Johnson with bp Magazine’s bphope Vlog. Today, I will again be speaking about the rollercoaster that is acceptance, and specifically, Anger.

I am sure we’re all familiar with this. You are going along with your life, doing well, thriving, when all of a sudden there it is, bipolar. Maybe it’s depression, maybe it’s mania, but it’s here, and it’s wreaking havoc. Last time I talked about grief, but we all know that it just as easily brings something else: anger. It brings the questions: “why me?”, “why now?”, “now what?”. It means now you have to work your butt off for stability, you now have this thing to fight your whole life, and it means possibly making changes to your life.

But you know what? Anger is natural. Anger, is normal. Feel it! Of course don’t put it on other people, but let yourself feel this anger. Find an outlet and let it out, the sooner you scream your way to acceptance the sooner you can move on and heal. For me, I write. Sometimes I find an exercise class or go for a long run. Find something that lets you get out that anger because it does stink. It’s not fair. But we can move forward. You will make it through this. You will find your way. Get that anger out so that you can get on with your treatment plan. I believe in you, because as much as I hate to have to say this, I’ve been there, and I made it through.

In the comments please write about how you cope with anger, and follow me next time to hear about bipolar and work. Again, this is Linea for bp Magazine’s bphope vlog.
