Pet of the Week: BEAR

Tags: bear

His loving and empathetic demeanor makes Bear a vital part of his owner’s life.

Names:

Bear’s Age:

3 years

First meeting:

My hubby and I rescued Bear when he was 4 weeks old.

Is Bear an Emotional Support Animal?

Yes, as well as a registered and trained service dog.

How does Bear brighten your day?

Bear is such a loving and sweet guy. He hugs and snuggles and follows me. Whenever I need someone to talk to that won’t judge, he seems to be right there waiting for me. Bear always seems to have a very loving look on his face that says”I know what your going through; it’s ok”

I’m never alone; Bear is my protector and my friend. When I start getting agitated or sad, he’s there to push me to get up or to calm down. He sits close when I need to calm down. He’s my sunshine!

How does Bear support / love you in ways humans cannot?

Bear knows when I’m going to have a panic attack and helps keep me grounded. He knows when my blood pressure and heart rate are too high, and notifies me before it gets too bad.

He keeps me from dropping too far into depression. His head in my lap and his touch has a strange calming affect.

He goes EVERYWHERE with me. Boy, if I put my shoes on or say I’m going anywhere he’s right next to me; sometimes I have a hard time getting him to stay at home if I need him to stay. He is my shadow—if I’m in the yard, he’s there getting some sun; if I’m showering, he is at the door; if I’m making dinner, he’s at the edge of the kitchen. He is my protector and my friend! He’s also very good with kids, and makes sure that he gets in the middle of any fights to make sure they stop.

What advice about pet ownership do you have to tell other people with bipolar disorder?

Don’t just get a dog to get a dog. Sometimes caring for a pet can cause extra stress that you can’t handle or don’t need. If you plan on getting one, check the shelters first; there will always be an animal who’s been through the same things you have that you will connect with. Take your time and always check with your doctor or therapist to see if they agree your ready. Then don’t worry about having everything perfect for them. They do as we do, eat, sleep and care for each other. Treat them as you would yourself, and vise versa. An animal that connects with you will help pull you out of depression, remind you to stay grounded and will eat with you, sleep with you, and be your shadow. That’s what you need.
