Fluid-filled small lesions that pop around or on lips leaving burning or tingling sensation and starts appearing as Blister is termed as a Fever Blister. It may also develop inside the nostrils, gums, palate and chin but commonly occurs on or around lips.

What is Fever Blister

A Fever blister may be defined as a small sore that is situated in the mouth or on the face (Commonly around the lip border) and causes itching or burning before crusting or bursting.

What Causes Fever Blister

Herpes simplex virus type 1 is the causative agent behind fever blister.

The herpes simplex virus 1 lies in the dormant state inside the human body in nerve cells. It is capable to sense changes in body temperature, stress level, pH balance and immune strength and reactivates by factors such as fever, hormonal change, weak immune system stress or sunburn. When conditions are favourable, the virus heads to the surface along the nerve fibres and replicate to create a new virus. The new virus then produces fever blister.

A fever blister is contagious, and herpes simplex virus-1 is easily transmitted through close contact, on kissing or sharing food or drinks.

What Are The Symptoms Of Fever Blister

A person may have just one outbreak of fever blister in his/her entire life or no recurrence or may have more than one outbreak every year. Some people may carry the virus throughout his/her life without any outbreak.

Thus, many of us who carry herpes simplex virus have no symptoms and may not be aware that they have been infected until fever blister appears. The first time when fever blister appears it may be severed as the infection is primary. Severe symptoms are more likely to affect elderly, small children and immune-compromised.

The symptom of fever blister includes:

  • Blisters, lesions, or ulcers on the face or in mouth
  • Tongue mouth pain
  • Swelling of lips
  • There may be swallowing difficulties
  • A sore throat
  • Swollen glands
  • Low fever
  • Headaches
  • Dehydration
  • Nausea

A fever blister develops in stages. Before its appearance, there is a burning or tingling sensation around the lips, and then fluid-filled lesions or sores develop mostly at the edge of the lower lip.

The sore then break and ooze forming a yellow crust and scabs off, and the uncovered pink skin heals on its own without scarring.

Each time the sore appears at the same place and with pain and irritation alongside.
