RISING AIR POLLUTION: TIME TO BE CAREFUL

  • Air pollution is associated with increased development of respiratory, cardiac, eye and skin disorders.
  • The most susceptible or vulnerable are those individuals who have existing lung diseases, children, elderly and pregnant women.
  • Children spend more time outdoors and breathe more air compared to an adult as per body weight and are more likely to develop respiratory, nasal – allergic rhinitis, asthma and chronic cough.
  • Rising sales of vehicular and industrial exhaust with decreasing forest land has given rise to dangerous levels of air pollution. Along with the worsening weather conditions air pollutants cross dangerous limits which can give rise to the development of irreversible lung disorders like COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) which are typically associated with smoking.
   Suggested tips for safeguarding:    Air-purifiers
  • There are no clear recommendations for the use of air purifiers but could be used for protecting the elderly and individuals with lung diseases. They are most prone to the ill effects of this toxic air.
Air quality in an enclosed car
  • Opening an enclosed car –keep the windows open for the entrapped air to clear. The AC could then be started and let it run before closing the windows.
   Diet
  • Healthy diet with good quantity of fluids, fresh fruits rich in Vitamin C and vegetables.
   Face masks for outdoor use
  • N95/99 masks can be used to reduce the inhalational load of air pollutants.
   Outdoor activities and morning walks
  • Air is more toxic in the early mornings – outdoor activities should preferably be done after the smog / fog settles down or in the evening hours.
  • Children to avoid outdoor activities as far as possible during the peak air pollution periods.
   Ventilate your kitchen, bathroom
  • Indoor-air can also be a significant source of air pollution. Good air circulation with exhaust in bathroom and kitchen would reduce the air pollutants from accumulating.
  • Indoor plants (aloe vera) with air purifying properties can help reduce the indoor pollution further homes and offices.
  • Air pollution appears lowest in late afternoons – keep the doors and windows open to allow air to circulate.
