Leadership in Blogging

Designed by Nova Namaste

Thank you to Nova from Nova’s Namaste 365 Online, who nominated me for the Leadership Blogger Award that she’s newly created.

The Leadership Blogger Award was created to nominate 1-2 individuals who have exemplified noticeable and noteworthy leadership. That could be in any way.

I thought this would be a good opportunity to talk about what Leadership and good citizenship look like within the blogging community.

We’re all leaders on our own blogs.  With our words we set the tone for the experience people will have when they visit us.  Regardless of whether people are engaging via comments or not, you are bringing them along with you on whatever journey you happen to be taking with your post.

Leadership also comes from how we welcome new bloggers to the community.  Many of us (including me) stumbled into WordPress having little idea what we were doing.  Your blog could be the first a new blogger comes across.  They might then follow you, and if you follow them back, you would become their first follower.  Do you remember who your first follower was?  I do.

The fact that we speak openly about difficult topics takes courage, and while one single voice may not be enough to create massive change, together we are stronger and we each contribute to making the collective voice louder.  And for those of us blogging about mental health, we’re showing that it’s about real people, not about stereotypes.  Even if sometimes it feels like we’re not reaching anyone, we’re still promoting the growth of the community.

I believe blogging leadership also comes from trying to lift others up rather than focusing on boosting yourself up.  Also, it involves recognizing that in the end supporting others is the most effective way to find your own blogging success.

So thank you Nova for nominating me for this new award.  I’m not going to nominate anyone in particular, because we’re all leaders in our own way.  But please feel free to share your thoughts either in the comments or by doing a post of your own.
