April 12, 2018. People who suffer brain injuries are at increased risk of dementia later in life, a large study suggests. An analysis of 2.8 million people found those who had one or more traumatic brain injuries were 24% more likely to get dementia than those who had not. The risk was greatest in people who had the injuries in their 20's, who were 63% more likely to get the condition at some point in their life. But independent experts said other lifestyle factors were more important. BBC news.

April 10, 2018. Alzheimer's gene has been neutralised in human brain cells for the first time, paving the way for a new treatment. Scientists 'turned off' protein associated with the dementia apoE4 gene. Gene damages nerve cells, with one copy doubling a person's Alzheimer's risk. Having two apoE4 copies raises an individual's risk of the disease by 12 times. Researchers warn therapies that are successful in the lab may fail in patients. Alzheimer's disease affects approximately 5.5 million people in the US. Mail.

April 9, 2018. Testing for high blood pressure can save lives - but experts say that unnecessary tests, such as whole body scans, may just find problems that probably don’t need treatment. So what should you be tested for? Most health checks are designed to look for risk factors or early signs of diseases - the two most common being heart disease or cancer. A quarter of premature deaths are caused by cardiovascular disease (heart attacks and strokes) and an estimated 50-80% of them are preventable. So any checks that could help early detection are surely a good thing. The NHS offers a health check every five years to everyone aged between 40 and 74 to pick up early signs of stroke risk, diabetes, dementia, and heart and kidney disease. Guardian.

April 7, 2018. Dementia isn't a disease itself, its a load of symptoms that can be caused by all sorts of things, and its difficult  to identify those causes while people are still alive. There is a massive development for stopping dementia from developing in the first place. If we know which genes cause the clumping of proteins that linked the disease, we might be able to find therapy's. - As were living longer, more and more people will live with dementia or care for someone who has it. So how we care for them is something we need to think about, not just at family level but at whole society. Its clear the science is playing catch-up. There's a trace against time to  find drugs that help slow or stop the symptoms. If we know what genes are involved, we can work on catching it early or even preventing people from developing it all together. That involves loads of testing and loads of money. April 6, 2018. Mario is an assistive robot. He communicates with patients suffering from dementia and can talk to them, play music and provide them with daily news.  Currently under trial in Ireland, the UK and Italy, researchers are testing him at St Brendan's care centre in Loughrea in the west of Ireland. Those behind the project say the technology is almost ready for Mario to become a market reality in five to six years, possibly even sooner. Euronews.

March 28, 2018. Alzheimer’s: This over-the-counter painkiller could prevent onset of disease. Ibubrofen has the power to prevent the onset of Alzheimer’s, scientists claim. They say the cheap over-the-counter tablets dampen inflammation in the brain caused by a build up of rogue proteins that trigger memory loss and confusion. In research published today Canadian experts suggest people should start taking a daily dose of anti-inflammatories to help prevent dementia following a positive saliva test. And if started early, just one a day could be enough to slash the chance of being struck down by the incurable condition. Daily Express.

A drug to slow the spread of dementia could be available in three years and a ‘vaccine’ that prevents the disease within a decade, experts say, It is now a matter of ‘when not if’ a cure will be found for the disease, which causes dementia, a panel of leading Alzheimer’s specialists said. March 7, 2018. February 14, 2018. Scientists reverse Alzheimer's in middle-aged mice and claim the drug could be used like a daily vitamin to prevent the disease. The Cleveland Clinic team admit they were 'shocked' by the clear-cut result. They were using the same drug as Merck's phase 3 clinical trial in humans which was called off yesterday due to safety fears. Lead author Riqiang Yan claims he believes it can be safe and it is the answer to treating or preventing Alzheimer's. Mail.

February 1, 2018. To find a way of diagnosing alzheimer's  disease from a blood test. We know its a disease that starts more than a decade before those first symptoms appear, and its going to be really vital to treat them. This is the most successful blood test so far. Its 90% accurate. It works by looking at the blood and predicting the levels of amyloid beta inside the brains of patients who have alzheimer's disease, mild memory impairments or were completely healthy.
