Emergency contraceptive pills have reached quite top on the ‘essentials’ shopping lists nowadays. The ‘morning-after pills’ are saving many teenagers and even adult couples from the burden of an Unwanted pregnancy. A pregnancy, that is unprepared for, leads to shotgun weddings, financial troubles, and mental stress. In such scenarios, contraception has managed to reduce the number of these pregnancies following an episode of unprotected sexual intercourse.

Protected sexual intercourse is being strongly advocated around the world. In spite of that, there are many instances of ‘oops moments’ or a forced sexual act. Following it, an unwanted pregnancy can be a nightmare for the woman or the couple. Emergency contraceptive pills have come as a life-saver for many teenagers and even adult couples.

A 20th-century discovery, emergency contraceptive medicine has grown into a mammoth-sized medical industry. I-pill and Unwanted 72 have emerged as leading emergency contraceptive pills in various countries. So, there is always the ‘which is the best’ question arising. To conclude that, let’s discuss both merits and demerits of these ‘need of the hour’ medicine.

Unwanted 72 and I-pill:

  • Unwanted 72 is manufactured by Mankind Pharmaceuticals, a firm that is providing medical services for twenty-three years. Unwanted 72 is approved and sold in the United States and Japan along with India.
  • I-pill is manufactured by the Piramal healthcare, a branch of the business conglomerate, Piramal group. Since its manufacture, I-pill has become a household name.

Composition:

  • Both Unwanted 72 and I-pill are composed of Levonorgestrel.
  • It is a hormone from the family of progestins and mainly used in contraceptive medicine.
  • The medicine deters the egg release from the ovary or halts the conception of the egg. In the case of an already fertilized egg, the hormone causes changes in the uterus lining to stop the process of implantation.

Dosage:

  • While I-pill comes in the form of an oral 1.5 mg tablet, Unwanted 72’s dosage is 0.75mg.
  • The dosage of I-pill is one 1.5mg tablet within 72hours of an unprotected sexual intercourse.
  • While Unwanted 72 refers to the dosage as one single pill, Gynaecologists often prescribe two dosages of is 0.75mg tablets. The second tablet should be taken after 12 hours following the consumption of the first tablet.

The need for a prescription

  • Though both I-pill and Unwanted 72 are available over the counter easily, it is important to consult a doctor before. A gynecologist will be able to clear out any confusion overdosage.
  • If the person is pregnant already, diabetic, hypertensive, epileptic or is taking any other medicine on regular basis, then it is compulsory to consult a gynecologist before popping in an Unwanted 72 or I-pill. Both the pills are known to have contraindications to the medicines which are used regularly.

When to take ECPs?

  • Unwanted 72 isn’t just the name of the medicine, it is the instruction itself. This emergency contraceptive should be taken within 72 hours of an unprotected sexual activity. Likewise, for I-pill.
  • Both Unwanted 72 and I-pill should be consumed within 12 to 72 hours and not later than that.
  • Both the pills work on LH and FSH hormones and stall them to prevent either fertilization or implantation processes.
  • The oral tablet is taken along with a glass of water is immediately absorbed by the body. The medicine starts taking effect in about 1.5-2.5 hours and will remain in the system for up to 7 days.
  • Both I-pill and Unwanted 72 go by the motto, ‘the sooner, the better.’

Administration:

  • Both Unwanted 72 and I-pill are used as an emergency contraceptive and long-term contraceptive.
  • In long-term contraception, it is significant to remember each dosage and make certain not to miss it. Or else, it might lead to contraception failure resultant in a pregnancy.
  • However, long-term contraception is unsafe for the woman’s reproductive cycle. Doctors are now advising strongly against emergency contraceptives and advocating protected sexual intercourse.

Efficacy:

  • Efficacy here means the chances of preventing a pregnancy. The best result of either contraceptive can be achieved only when taken at the earliest.
  • I-pill offers a remarkable 95%-98% efficacy i.e. if taken as per the instructions, there are highest chances of avoiding a pregnancy.
  • If one consumes the medicine within 24 hours, then there is a 98% chance of avoiding a pregnancy which the highest among all contraceptives.
  • Unwanted-72 is 95% effective when consumed within 24 hours of the sexual activity, 85% if taken within 25-48 hours and only 58% after 49-72 hours.

After taking I-pill or Unwanted 72:

  • Due to the working of the medicine on hormones, women usually notice a dark brown discharge or light bleeding on days other than the cycle. It is known as ‘withdrawal bleeding’ or ‘breakthrough bleeding’.
  • For both I-pill and Unwanted 72, women have withdrawal bleeding in around 3-4 days after consuming. It subsides in a few days.
  • However, it is important not to confuse breakthrough bleeding with implantation bleeding. Both I-pill and Unwanted 72 might delay a menstrual cycle. Nevertheless, if the period is overdue for too long, a pregnancy test must be done immediately.

Side-effects of ECPs:

  • Consumption of both Unwanted 72 and I-pill causes spotting and light bleeding on days other than that of the cycle.
  • One might also have vaginal discharges and discomfort. Nausea and Vomiting are also some common side effects of these ECPs.
  • If the woman has a baby and is breastfeeding, she has to consult her doctor before using Unwanted 72 or I-pill.
  • Gastrointestinal issues might arise following the use of these contraceptives.
  • The constant ebbing of hormones caused by Unwanted 72 or I-pill might affect the cycle. One might have a delayed or an early period depending on the body’s response.
  • Ectopic pregnancy is one of the risks associated with the use of emergency contraception and one using these pills should go for regular check-ups.

Along with these side effects, there are a few contraindications for I-pill and Unwanted 72.

  • If one has an identified history of allergy to levonorgestrel or some other component existing along with it, it is advisable to avoid taking Unwanted 72 or I-pill as a measure of contraception.
  • Light bleeding accompanied with clots and a discharge which is dark brown is observed generally in women who consume Unwanted 72 or I-pill. However, if the patient has incidents of abnormal vaginal bleeding earlier, it is advisable to evade these contraceptives.
  • Any patient who is currently suffering or had breast cancer in the past should not use Unwanted 72 or I-pill.
  • Both Unwanted72 and I-pill are not suggested to patients who have experienced a stroke recently or in the past had a bleeding disorder of the brain.
  • Patients experiencing blood clotting disorder should not use Unwanted 72 or I-pill.
  • Those who have Porphyria, a rare genetic disorder of the lymphatic system and blood should avoid these contraceptives.
  • Patients who have a weakened kidney/liver function should use Unwanted 72 and I-pill with caution.
  • Diabetic patients who use Unwanted 72 or I-pill should get monitored continuously for their blood sugars levels.

Are Unwanted 72 and I-pill similar to condoms?

No. Neither Unwanted 72 nor I-pill offers protection against any sexually transmitted diseases or infections. Unlike products like condoms, they can’t hinder the spread of HIV or STDs.

Also, it is important to remember that these contraceptive pills can’t abort a pregnancy once the implantation has taken place. Therefore, either Unwanted 72 or I-pill, both should be limited to use as an emergency contraceptive.

Which is better: I-pill or Unwanted 72

  • The answer to the above question depends on what one is expecting from the medicine.
  • Unwanted 72 and I-pill, both are composed of the same medicine. Yet, Ipil has a higher dosage compared to that of Unwanted 72. Unwanted 72, which comes in the form of a 0.75mg oral tablet is a lower dosage while I-pill has a dosage of 1.5mg.
  • Like stated previously, gynecologists often prescribe two dosages of Unwanted 72. If the second dosage is missed, there might be a chance of conceiving in spite of taking the contraceptive. Still, this low dosage amount of Unwanted 72 allows the woman’s body to absorb the medicine in low amounts. This might give a control of hormonal changes in the body causing less damage to the reproductive cycle.
  • The fact that cannot be ignored the efficacy percentage offered by I-pill which is higher than that of Unwanted 72.
  • Also, over the years, I-pill has successfully made its name known to a majority of the population through good marketing. And now, it has emerged as the most trusted brand among contraceptives.
  • Nevertheless, given the low dosage amount of Unwanted 72, it might be the best one to use as one can decide on the dosage depending on one’s body responds to the medicine.

Unwanted 72 might be the best option for those looking for a minimal effect on the body in the future. However, if one is choosing efficacy over everything else (Well, what’s the point if we don’t get the desired result?) I-pill is the right choice for them. The best for each individual ultimately depends on what they opt for.
