DHR Health Continues to Educate the Community about Wilderness Safety at Survival Conference
Edinburg, TX—As the time of year that many sportsmen transition from the water to the brush for hunting season in South Texas, it is important to be aware of the hidden dangers that outdoor activities present and how to manage them should an accident happen. Snake and spider bites, poison ivy, gunshot wounds, heat related illness, drowning, and other emergent issues can arise when out in the South Texas Brush Country. On Saturday, October 28, 2017 Doctors Hospital at Renaissance will host the 4th Annual Brush Country Medicine and Survival Conference to educate and enlighten the medical community, first responders, and the general public about these potential hazards.
The Brush Country Medicine and Survival Conference will be held at the Edinburg Conference Center at Renaissance from 8:00 AM until 3:00 PM, with registration starting at 7:30 AM. Conference speakers include world-renowned physicians, Border Patrol agents, Texas Wildlife Commission officers, and military-trained security personnel. This year’s conference will also include a splinting workshop and a search and rescue drone demonstration.
“This will be a fun and informative event for people who enjoy the South Texas brush country,” states Dr. Kip Owen, sports medicine orthopedic surgeon at the DHR Health Orthopedic Institute and conference founder. “We encourage anyone who spends time outdoors, be it fishing, hunting, hiking, or sightseeing, to attend.”
At this conference, attendees will learn how to:
– Treat injuries such as snake bites, spider bites, poison ivy, foot blisters, and more
– Recognize the approaches needed when faced with heat illness or frostbite
– Properly make a splint
– Pack a survival kit
– Review what to do in case of drowning/ near drowning
– Learn Texas Wildlife and Conservation guidelines
– Discuss border safety when confronted by non-hunters
