Gum Disease Treatment at Home

Gum disease, also called gingivitis, is a condition characterized by swollen and bleeding gums, persistent bad breath and loose teeth. It is primarily caused by poor oral hygiene that leads to plaque buildup along the gum line. Other contributing factors include smoking, stress, poor nutrition, and certain illnesses and medications.

Perhaps the easiest way to relieve the pain and discomfort it comes with is to rinse the mouth with a mixture of warm water and salt. If this does not work for you, there are several more home remedies that have proven to be effective in alleviating symptoms, treating the disease and preventing further complications.

  • Aloe vera. Because of its healing and anti-inflammatory properties, this antimicrobial plant can kill bacteria and fight disease, as well as heal mouth ulcers and fight bad breath. Massage your gums with aloe vera gel and leave it a few minutes before rinsing it off.
  • Coconut oil. Its anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties help in treating gum disease. Combine it with baking soda to help neutralize acids in the mouth. Mix equal parts coconut oil and baking soda and use it as toothpaste.
  • Cranberry juice. Its high vitamin C content makes cranberry juice effective in fighting infection, including gum disease. Drink four ounces of cranberry juice every day to prevent bacteria from sticking to your teeth.
  • Hydrogen peroxide. This is a strong antibacterial agent that fights gum disease and kills germs, and can even whiten your teeth. Mix hydrogen peroxide and water in equal parts and use it as a mouthwash.
  • Sea salt. Natural sea salt has minerals that ease the pain, heal infection and reduce inflammation. Mix a small amount of the salt in warm water and use it as a mouth rinse three times a day until symptoms subside.
  • Tea bags. Tea has tannic acid that reduces inflammation and pain, especially black tea. It also has antioxidants to help fight infection. Steep a tea bag, allow it to cool and place it against the affected area for a few minutes.
  • Tea tree oil. The anti-inflammatory properties of tea tree oil can aid in soothing inflamed and irritated gums. Apply a few drops of the oil on your toothpaste, or use toothpaste with tea tree oil when brushing your teeth twice daily.

Aside from the listed remedies above, make sure that you also maintain proper oral hygiene, including regular brushing, flossing, and mouth rinsing to help decrease plaque buildup on your teeth. Most importantly, get regular check-ups from your trusted dentist to always make sure that your oral health is in perfect condition.
