Know About Dental Bridges Pros and Cons?

Dental bridges are false teeth fixed on real teeth on either side of a missing tooth. They are a great option in filling these gaps, making you feel like you have never lost any tooth at all. Leaving gaps is not a good idea because it can make chewing food tricky and cause surrounding teeth to lean into the empty space. Dental Bridges can fix all these chewing and leaning problems plus more. Also, porcelain dental bridges look like your existing teeth, so no one can tell that you have had work done. But just like all things, it has its own share of pros and cons.

What are the Pros of Dental Bridges?

  • No fusses. Compared to traditional dentures that need to be removed for cleaning, bridges are permanently fixed to your mouth. Thus, you can brush your teeth normally.
  • Restores natural smile. Aside from filling in gaps, bridges also improve the shape and color of the teeth on either side of the gap. Porcelain dental bridges are stain resistant.
  • Improves surrounding teeth. Teeth that are discolored, cracked or filled can be restored to a good condition with dental bridges. They also prevent surrounding teeth from leaning or shifting from the gap.
  • Fast installation. Compared to implants and other more complex solutions, dental bridges are fixed in place during the second dental appointment in just a few days.

What are the Cons of Dental Bridges?

  • Filing down of teeth. The healthy teeth on either side of the gap will have to be crowned to attach and hold the bridge in place. Crown installation involves filing down the tooth before the replacement cap is placed on top of it.
  • Nerve damage. There are very extreme cases where the bridgework can cause the death of underlying nerves. When this happens, root canal treatment will have to be done.

Although dental bridges are a relatively common procedure, there are some factors that can disqualify someone from getting bridgework. Examples are when there is not enough space to fit a bridge or a lack of healthy bone structure to hold the bridge in place. This is why it is important that you schedule a dental appointment with an experienced and qualified dentist to explain to you all your options and determine the best one to cater to your specific needs.
